Budapest will welcome the International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM) Pentathlon World Championships tomorrow, with the Laser-Run World Championships set to be incorporated for the first time. Competition is set to begin tomorrow at Kincsem Park, running until next Sunday (September 8). It is the fifth time that the Hungarian capital has hosted the Modern Pentathlon World Championships, having organized it in 1969, 1979, 1989 and 1999.
WHAT TO EXPECT IN BUDAPEST
Aimed at many periods Hungary was one the hot acnes of the UIPM movement and Budapest hosts the Pentathlon World Championships for the seventh time since its debut in 1954.
For the first time, the local organizers have been dared to create a Modern Pentathlon Arena where all five disciplines take place in the same venue, reflecting the format that will be used at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and which was introduced 12 months ago at the UIPM 2018 Pentathlon World Championships in Mexico City.
All restraints across the six days of rivalry will take place at Kincsem Park, the home of horse racing in Budapest which has been particularly converted into a Pentathlon Arena with a temporary swimming pool.
ROAD TO TOKYO
Six more athletes will earn the right to become Olympic pentathletes in Tokyo (JPN) next year by finishing in a prominent position this weekend.
On Friday, three women will join the 15 who have already qualified, and on Saturday three men will likewise take the tally of male qualifiers to 18, according to the criteria set out in the UIPM qualification process.
Lithuania’s women and Great Britain’s men have already secured the maximum two places, but for every other nation, the prize of the Olympic 2020 qualification is still very much up for grabs, with strong rivalries emerging nationally as well as internationally.
This year will see action in the men and women’s separate, team and relay events. A mixed relay will also be disputed on Sunday, timed to accord with the second Pierre de Coubertin Pentathlon Day, a global celebration of the legacy of the founder of Modern Pentathlon.
Three places at next year’s Olympic 2020 Games in Tokyo are available in both the men and women’s individual competitions. A number of athletes have already qualified for Tokyo 2020 Olympics at competitions such as the Pan American Games in Lima and the European Modern Pentathlon Championships.
The fifth edition of the Laser-Run World Championships will also be contested over the week, taking place alongside the Pentathlon World Championships for the first time. Later this month, Budapest is due to host the inaugural World Urban Games from September 13 to 15, in which laser-run will be a showcase sport.
