Olympic Boxing: Some Olympic Boxing Hopefuls Needed Only One More Day

The German boxer had waited four years and a ticket to the Tokyo Olympic was incredibly close when the qualifying tournament in London was suspended due to the coronavirus epidemic. One more day and I could have had it, a 34-year-old welterweight who is studying for a doctorate in neuroscience. I cried because I was so disappointed. You are so close to your greatest goal and everything is stopped.

The Copper Box competition was suspended after three days. Shortly thereafter, the Olympic 2020 Games were postponed for a year and is scheduled to open on July 23, 2021. Likewise, lightweights Luke McCormack of Great Britain and Nikolai Terteryan of Denmark can qualify in their next bout, while their welterweight twin brothers Pat McCormack and Sebastian Terteryan can secure spots with two more wins each.

The competition in London lasted long enough for 16 boxers to qualify. Among them was British featherweight, Peter McGrail. Tokyo Olympic sees you there, he wrote on Instagram, followed by an explanation of the virus. It was so painful for me, Sonvico, 31, who like Apetz had to fight again on day 4, said he left London empty-handed. It’s difficult because you have to start training again. It’s a lot of work, a lot of sacrifices.

Like other athletes, they also have practical locking challenges. Davison, a flyweight who put aside his Olympic aspirations to start a family, trains at home while co-parenting with three young children. Apetz is attempting to complete his doctorate in neuroscience, examining brain stimulation in Parkinson’s disease. Sonvico is an investigator at the gendarmerie, who exercises police functions but under French military jurisdiction. She was on leave while on the national team, but that was soon to end.

Apetz and Sonvico only set goals for the Tokyo Olympic after their division – welterweight – and another was added after the Rio de Janeiro Olympics. The Olympic 2020 Games will have five female classes; men’s divisions increased from 10 to eight. For Sonvico, representing your country is like perpetuating a family tradition. His father spent his career in the military.

“Since I was little, I have lived with people who wear French uniforms,” she said.

Sonvico, who finished ninth at the 2019 World Championships, could become a professional after the Olympic cycle. Any athlete who has already qualified for the Tokyo Olympic has been assured that they will keep their places for 2021. The International Olympic Committee task force overseeing boxing has said that the European qualifier, once postponed, “will resume from where he was suspended “and those other boxers will not be eligible.

Qualifying tournaments in Africa and Asia / Oceania preceded the London competition, which started on March 14. The Turkish boxing federation said at least two of its boxers and a coach were positive for the virus after the London event. However, the IOC working group said it was “not possible to know the source of the infection”.

Apetz, a 2018 world championship bronze medalist and six-time national champion, is set to face Karolina Koszewska, 6 feet 1 inch, a 38-year-old Polish left-hander who won gold at the 2019 European Games. Apetz, who describes himself as a “smart boxer,” had planned to stop fighting in 2016, but his national team asked him to continue when welterweight was added to the program for Tokyo.

Olympic Boxing: US Amateur Boxers Choosing Delayed Tokyo Olympic Over Pro Riches

Keyshawn Davis took several weeks to choose his path to boxing fame after the postponement of the Tokyo Olympic. Thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, the top professional hopeful of the 2020 U.S. Olympic qualifying team suddenly faced almost a year without the amateur fight that counted. He could wait 16 months for his gold shooting in Tokyo, or he could accept one of the many lucrative offers to immediately start his professional career.

When Davis began his deliberations, the 21-year-old lightweight leaned toward the pros. After talking to his family, coaches, and fellow fighters, he decided to keep his Olympic flame burning. So far, each member of the American team agrees. Even with an extra year to wait, Davis and his 12 teammates are still focused on Tokyo and the rewards of the Olympic experience.

The postponement of the Tokyo Olympics could have caused upheavals for many teams from Western countries in an amateur sport that often loses its brightest talents to the pros, even in the normal 2020 Olympic cycles. But American head coach Billy Walsh has managed to keep his entire team together for 2021 by selling his boxers on the promise of a more promising professional future if they show some patience. The Irish coach who restored the fragility of the American program during his five years in office. Since I came here, we have rotated this around a piece.

We gave the guys the vision of first becoming an Olympic champion, like all the big guys did at the time, and use as a platform to launch your professional career. After decades of predation on professional gaming and uncountable scandals, amateur boxing is no longer the flagship Olympic event that catapulted Cassius Clay, Sugar Ray Leonard and Oscar De La Hoya to the international sports superstar. The Olympic experience still turns heads in sport – and it remains an extremely precious commodity for boxing promoters, who pay higher prices for the fighters they can promote with “Olympian” continually affixed to them like a new first name.

You can go there now, and you’re going to have to fight around 20 fights to fight for a world title, “Walsh recently told his fighters. You are going to get an Olympic gold medal, or if you have these Olympic rings on your shoulder, this will give you quick contact to the world title fights. You are a name. You are known. You are an Olympian.

Davis also relied on the advice of Shakur Stevenson, the 2016 Olympic silver medalist who trained with Davis on the way to Rio de Janeiro. With his Olympic renown, Stevenson clinched a title in his 10th professional bout and won a world championship in his 13th bout last fall.

Stevenson highlighted the leap in competition when Davis moved from fighting amateur friends to seasoned professionals. Davis has the skill to win many fights but needs experience that the Olympic cycle can bring. Walsh and the American fighters realize that no major competition will probably take place before next year.

So they are staying for the moment with virtual training distributed on an application by their strength and conditioning department. When the team can meet in Colorado Springs safely, Walsh will. Boxers are used to being in training camp and having a goal at the end,” said Walsh. When that goal is detached.

It leaves them open to all kinds of things and ideas, so we’re trying to give them that little bit of structure. When you reach a certain age, six months is not long. For a 20-year-old, it seems to be forever. Davis already has a broad perspective on the months to come. He stays alive in the gymnasium, but he also has plans that will benefit his ultimate goal of becoming an important and well-known pro fighter.

Olympic Boxing: Youth Olympic cheer for GB

Great Britain’s boxing medal record has been very good at the three summers Youth Olympic held so far, with three golds and three bronze leaving them behind Cuba and Russia. The inaugural Games were held in Singapore in 2010 and GB had one male boxer qualify for the event in Welsh bantamweight Zack Davies, who lost in the third-place bout to Poland’s Dawid Michelus 12-7.

Unlike the regular Olympic, only one bronze medal is awarded at the Youth Games, but it was a very creditable performance from Davies. The 2014 Games in Nanjing meant China became the first country to stage both the regular Olympic (Beijing 2008) and Youth Olympic. GB had three male boxers who had qualified and two delivered bronze medals, although Hackney’s Viddal Riley missed out.

The under-81kg division as he lost out a split decision 2-1 to Armenia’s Narek Manasyan in the third-place bout. Nonetheless, it was again a very good performance from our local man and, in the under-52kg category, Muhammad Ali (how could he not succeed with a name like that?) secured a bronze medal after losing his semi-final to Shakur Stevenson, the eventual gold medalist from the USA. Ali, he bounced back to win the third-place contest by clearly outpointing India’s Gaurav Solanki to cement a fine tournament overall.

Peter McGrail also won bronze in the under-56kg class, after losing his semi-final encounter with Cuba’s eventual gold medalist Javier Ibanez Diaz. McGrail regrouped to outpoint Algeria’s Tamma Salem in their third-place bout to seal another fine display in this very tough and competitive tournament. At Buenos Aires in 2018, GB had outstanding success in the ring, with no fewer than three gold medals and a bronze for good measure.

GB won its first-ever gold medal in these Games through Ivan Hope Price with a first-round stoppage of Thailand’s Sarawut Sukthet in the final of their under-52kg encounter. Not to be outdone, Slovakian-born Karol Itauma won GB’s second gold medal with a 4-1 points success over Russia’s Ruslan Kolesnikov and a bronze medal went to Hassan Azim at under-64kg. Although outpointed in his semi-final by the eventual Olympic champion from Russia Ilya Popov, Azim regrouped to stop Morocco’s Mohammed Boulaoja in the third-place bout.

For the first time at these Games, GB fielded a female boxer in the form of Londoner Caroline Dubois in the 60kg division. Older brother Daniel is already a multi-titled professional champion and tipped by many pundits as a future world heavyweight champion. Caroline won her three bouts in Buenos Aires with identical 5-0 scores, including her final triumph over Thailand’s Porntip Buapa to become the first British female boxer to both enter and then win a gold medal at the event.

She remains undefeated with a 40-0 record and, besides her Youth Olympic success, has also won three European Junior Championships, a World Youth Championship, a European Youth Championship, and two English National Youth Championships.

Caroline in her first bout as a senior in the lightweight division outpointed Ala Staradub of Belarus in her opening bout at the Tokyo Olympic Qualifying tournament at the Copper Box Arena last month. The event was then curtailed due to the coronavirus pandemic before she could meet Finland’s Mira Potkonen in her next qualifying contest.

But it should be noted that Potkonen derailed reigning Olympic lightweight champion, Katie Taylor, in Rio in 2016, when the Irishwoman was hoping to defend her the crown she had won at the London 2012 Games. We await further details of how and when this qualifying tournament will re-commence, given that the Tokyo Olympic have been postponed until the summer of 2021.

Olympic Boxing: McCracken Does Not Expect British Boxers to Turn Backs on Tokyo Olympic

Rob McCracken says that he does not expect any Great Britain boxers to turn their back on the Olympic 2020 Games to turn professional. The Tokyo Olympic had been due to start in July, but the coronavirus pandemic has seen it put back until July 2021.

Olympic lovers from all over the world are called to book Olympic 2020 tickets from our online platforms for Olympic Tickets. Olympic Boxing lovers can book Olympic Boxing Tickets from our ticketing marketplace exclusively on reduced prices.

Several boxers including gold medal hope Pat McCormack and Peter McGrail had planned to turn professional straight after the Tokyo Games. But the decision to move the Olympic back 12 months has meant them having to weigh up the benefit of boxing in Summer Games against getting started on their professional journey.

Olympic Hospitality |Olympic 2020 Tickets | Olympic Tickets | Olympic Packages| Tokyo Olympic Tickets
Olympic Hospitality |Olympic 2020 Tickets | Olympic Tickets | Olympic Packages| Tokyo Olympic Tickets

In reality, it should not be a tough decision. In the UK, boxers in the podium squad can receive funding of up to £30,000 depending on their medal record, while anyone turning professional now would not have any idea of when they would be able to box and earn money, while they will also be entering a very crowded market place, with all professional boxers presently not earning.

And while professionals are allowed to compete now at the Tokyo Olympic, it seems unimaginable that a boxer would just leave the GB program to box professionally only to return next year. McCracken, the GB performance director, is currently having talks with all the members of the squad to map out plans for the next few weeks and months, while their base in Sheffield is closed down.

You’d have thought [they will all stay in the Olympic program. I am speaking to all the boxers at the minute but hopefully, we will be OK. There are no tournament schedules right now, we are in the same boat as other countries.

“The ones who have qualified have qualified, but it might not be all the same boxers at the tournament, it might be a year away, we just don’t know,” McCracken said.

Olympic Hospitality |Olympic 2020 Tickets | Olympic Tickets | Olympic Packages| Tokyo Olympic Tickets

So far two British boxers, McGrail, the featherweight, and Galal Yafai, the flyweight, have qualified for Tokyo and they are assured of their place. Both effectively moved up in weight when the divisions were restructured last year, so neither have any worries about outgrowing their divisions. The European qualifying tournament in London was suspended after three days, with the plan to restart it whenever it proves possible.

With the Games being pushed back 12 months, it seems likely that some of the same boxers may not be there for the rearranged tournament, leading to the possibility of either a string of walkovers or the organizers allowing substitutes. It seems unlikely that every single boxer will be there at the same weight. If they start again as Day 4, it could be they might just keep the countries the same and allow them to pick who they want.

Marcial said that there were indeed lucrative offers for him to fight professionally, adding that he was seriously considering accepting one of them which he described as “staggering”. But his commitment to the flag and the country at the Olympic will come first, Marcial said in an interview with ABS CBN News on Saturday.

Marcial is one of three local athletes who qualified for the Tokyo Olympic, which were postponed until July 2021 following the coronavirus pandemic which is driving half the world’s population mad. Even Marcial’s parent association – the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines – has certain that the boxer’s contribution to the Tokyo Olympic is a sure thing.

Ed Picson, Secretary-General of the Association of Boxing Associations in the Philippines, said the national sport governing body is “determined to work with him to achieve his Olympic dream and provide support and advice where and when it matters.” is necessary”.

Olympic Boxing: Chantelle Cameron has finally opened up on her Olympic heartbreak

It’s a subject that’s been too painful to properly address up until now, but Chantelle Cameron (12-0, 7KOs) has finally opened up on her Olympic anguish. The Northampton fighter was a long-time star of the Team GB set-up but was controversially overlooked for the 2016 Rio Olympic.

The whole team qualified apart from me and the fact I’d already beaten lots of the girls who went broke my heart. Everyone was asking what happened afterward and I just shut myself in my room for two weeks. People were very worried about me. I’d made so many sacrifices for four years – continuous training. I had no social life because I was so determined to go to the Olympic. I felt cheated out of it because of my style.

I did not want anything to do with boxing after that. I didn’t watch any of the Olympic. The thought of boxing made me physically sick. I still loved fighting. I went back to the kickboxing gym but I realized it’s not the same. I was in love with boxing even though it broke my heart. I felt like I’d let my family down and my town down.

If I was going to leave boxing, I wanted to leave with a major medal. I couldn’t leave with anything. The plan was to win that and then just walk away. I went to the Europeans calmed and relaxed. I boxed brilliantly and boxed a Russian’s head off. I laughed when they raised her hand. It was a joke. Then I nearly died. I didn’t realize I had septicemia. I ended up in the hospital for a week and I had to have it cut out.

I was still on Team GB but I had a pump strapped to my leg. It was three months of doing nothing. I opted to go into professional boxing. I thought I’d have a go and I immediately loved it. When I’m in camp, I’m fully dedicated – as much as any professional. Outside of camp, I like to have fun these days. I have to enjoy myself because I remember how depressed I was over the Olympic disappointment. Boxing is a sport for me and I’m having fun now. I go in there to destroy opponents because I don’t want to leave things to judges.

I have a love-hate relationship with boxing. It’s a rollercoaster with lots of ups and downs. You may want to quit when the downs come but if you persevere, you can be a champion. The sport destroyed me mentally and physically and I had no idea what my purpose in life was. I thought it was my be-all and end-all.

My family tell me that every time I’ve been knocked down I get up stronger than before. The advice I’d give to youngsters is that this is a sport and you should enjoy it. You can’t lose the fun factor. I made that mistake before and it became a chore and made me miserable. I’m doing this for fun and to secure my future. If it doesn’t work out, I’m still going to be healthy and breathing. I’d just have to find a new chapter.

This is my last chance to make it work and I’m giving it everything. Joining Jamie’s stable has brought the fun back. I don’t even feel like I’m in camp. I’m training hard and putting so much work in but it’s fun. I used to hate and dread training but now I enjoy getting up and going to Jamie’s gym. I’m learning and improving because I’m relaxed. I’m enjoying boxing again.

Jamie and Nigel are very positive so when I joined with my confidence was low, doubting myself, they motivated me to push on. It’s a great team to be around. After boxing, I want to become a PE teacher. I’m currently trying to get on to a university course. I plan to study alongside my boxing career. I’ve always wanted to be a PE teacher and then, of course, there are good holidays you get!

Olympic Boxing: Teenage boxer Ankushita Boro wants to emulate idol Mary Kom

The 19-year-old from the Sonitpur district of Assam is one of the most promising young boxers in the country. She had to travel outside her village to train, but that didn’t stop the grainy girl from chasing her dreams. Ankushita made rapid progress once she became familiar with the sport. Originally from the land of star boxers like Lovlina Borgohai and Jamuna Boro, the biggest milestone of his fledgling career came 5 years in the sport – a gold medal at the 2017 AIBA World Junior Women’s Boxing Championships.

The highest step of On the podium, Ankushita also won the best boxer title of the tournament. The medal of the world junior championships was a major motivation to help Ankushita to push harder. The teenage boxer was part of India’s training camp last year and, in January, he won the gold medal of 64 kg at the Youth Games in Khelo, India. It was one of the greatest achievements of my career.

When I started boxing, nationals were banned. Before, we only participated in district level tournaments. But when it was lifted, I participated in the nationals. I represented India. It was indeed a dream come true for me to win the Junior World Championships, said Ankushita today. The lockdown due to the new coronavirus pandemic has come as a break, but Ankushita is doing its best to work on its fitness and skills with support from the Adani group’s Garv Hai campaign.

Our trainers have given us training routines for locking. We normally train with our partners. Now that we have no more partners, we are doing exercises at home, explained Ankushita day by day. Right now, we are doing fitness. And we work on your skills, analyze our techniques. Yes, I am in contact with my coaches.

Speaking of her introduction to the sport that she later fell in love with, Ankushita, we didn’t know much about boxing in our village. At the start, I didn’t know much about the sport, but a course was set up here. A friend of mine told me about it and took me there. I participated and I learned the basics and I was finally selected. From 2012, I started professional-level training.

Ankushita wants to follow in the footsteps of his idol and 6-time world champion Mary Kom. When Mary won the Olympic bronze in London in 2012, Ankushita began her boxing journey. A glimpse of her boxing hero in action is enough to make Ankushita forget the world and work toward her goals with more motivation.

When I started boxing, the London Olympics were held and Mary Kom won a medal there. My biggest sports idol is Mary Kom. I follow her and her matches relentlessly. Just seeing it in action motivates me. She helped me push myself harder. Mary Kom’s physical form and technique are something that amazes me. His foot movement is great and it’s something I want to learn and integrate into my game.

I work hard at the junior level. But I know that I must at least double my efforts if I am to find success at the senior level. Last year, I participated in the national championships and I did well and I want to take it to the international level.

The tournament, the final of four continental qualifiers, was due to run from March 26-April 3 in Buenos Aires but was called off after the Argentine government canceled all international events in the country a bid to prevent the spread of coronavirus. USA Boxing has offered to stage the rearranged Americas Olympic qualifying boxing tournament in Colorado Springs should Argentina decide not to go ahead with the event.

The Tokyo Olympic has now been put back to the summer of 2021. So far two qualification tournaments have been completed – the Africa and Asia/Oceania events – while the European qualifier in London was suspended after three days.

It is understood that the Boxing Task Force, which is running Olympic boxing on behalf of the IOC after AIBA was barred, will hope to reschedule the European and Americas events for before Christmas, allowing the final world qualifier for anyone who does not make it through the continental events – which was due to have taken place on the outskirts of Paris in May – to be held early next year.

When the London tournament was suspended, UK Sport, the government funding body that backed it, expressed an interest in staging the remainder of the event, although no decisions are likely until the worldwide lockdown finishes. Olympic Boxing: Canelo Explains Why He Has Zero Interest to Compete in Olympic

Mexican superstar Saúl ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has no interest in competing in the Olympic 2020 Games in Tokyo, which have been postponed until 2021. In the last two Olympic, there was a rule change that allowed professional boxers to compete in the Olympic tournaments.

While some high profile fighters, like Manny Pacquiao and Wladimir Klitschko, loosely entertained the possibility, neither man took any steps to enter the qualification system. In the last few months in Mexico, there was a growing legion of fans and officials who wanted to see Canelo enter the tournament and bring back a gold medal for his country.

If I had wanted to participate in a Tokyo Olympic I would not have become a professional, become a world champion and reached the very top. Thank God I have achieved it. Others have that dream of going to Tokyo in 2021 and taking that away from young people. It would not be fair of me to do that, explained Canelo in a video call to Fox Sports.

The organization running the boxing tournaments in the Olympic will be the International Olympic Committee (IOC), after the suspension of the International Boxing Association (AIBA), which was historically in charge of organizing and running the competitions.

Canelo would never explore that possibility because he refuses to take away a potential spot from a young fighter with aspirations of winning a gold medal. The rules imposed by AIBA have been maintained for the Tokyo competitions, including the acceptance of professional boxers to compete during the Olympic 2020.

Something that continues to cause controversy as several organizations like the WBC, believe it creates an unfair environment – while the WBA, WBO support idea of professionals looking to achieve an Olympic dream.

Will several Olympic Boxing hopefuls now look to turn pro?

With the postponement of the Tokyo Olympic for July, the next logical question for a couple of prominent men’s amateur boxers is when will they turn pro? And, might that be later this summer, instead of waiting for whenever the Olympics can happen? Arguably, the most prominent U.S. fighter is Norfolk, Virginia native, Keyshawn Davis. And, the 21-year-old amateur star in the 138 lb. division put on social media Tuesday that he’s looking to get paid to fight.

Further, Davis (above), a former national Golden Gloves champ (2017) who was second at last year’s World Championships and Pan American games, talked to ESPN.com boxing insider, Steve Kim. And, he elaborated on his social media post about the intrigue and possible timeline for turning pro.

I’m not going to even lie; I was thinking about the Olympic since I was 7 years old before I even started boxing. I didn’t even know what I wanted to be in the Olympic for, I just wanted to do it. I honestly thought I would be in the Olympic for the track.

There’s a lot of people saying that I already fight with no headgear, why waste another year fighting with no headgear in the amateurs, risking getting cut and stuff like that? I already have big options of going pro and being more well off than I am now.

There’s no rush to make that decision as all professional sports worldwide have ground to a halt for at least the foreseeable near future. Further, Davis’s marketability would go up, if he could win a Gold Medal in the delayed Tokyo Olympic.

This is something that helped former recent fighters’ careers like Andre Ward, who won Gold in the 2004 Athens Games. And, the most prominent case is going all the way back to Oscar De La Hoya winning Gold in the 1992 Barcelona Summer Games that launched his early pro career and huge money for fights early. Back to Davis, he’s arguably the most decorated fighter on the Team USA Squad that had to cancel their Olympic qualifying tournament for Argentina that was scheduled.

However, there are at least two other prominent names to also keep an eye on as to whether they will stay as amateurs or because of the limbo of Tokyo Olympic, go ahead and potentially turn pro like Davis? The world caught up to the United States in amateur boxing and medals have been hard to come by. The last male to win an Olympic medal was Deontay Wilder taking Bronze in the 2008 Beijing Fames.
