Olympic Triathlon: Winning British triathletes disqualified after crossing line hand-in-hand

For the British triathletes Jessica Learmonth and Georgia Taylor-Brown it should have been a moment of uncontaminated victory. Throughout a key Tokyo 2020 Olympics they had matched each other stroke for stroke, pedal for pedal and stride for stride, and so moments before the finish line they decided to impulsively join hands to celebrate thrashing the rest of the world’s top athletes. Fans from all over the world can buy Olympic Triathlon Tickets online.

Unbeknown to them, however, they had fallen foul of the International Triathlon Union’s competition rule 2:11f, which states that triathletes must not “finish in a forced tie situation where no struggle to separate the finish times has been made”. So, while Learmonth was initially given the victory after a photo finish, she and Taylor-Brown were quickly disqualified.

An appeal was rejected, which meant that another British athlete, Vicky Holland, moved up from fifth to third behind the new winner, Flora Duffy of Bermuda. Unluckily the rules relating to tied races were changed after Britain’s Olympic gold medalist Alistair Brownlee notably pulled his brother Johnny, who was suffering from heatstroke, across the line in a race in Mexico in 2016.

Playing the good Samaritan has also been banned by the International Triathlon Federation, with its rules now stating that an athlete cannot physically assist the forward progress of another athlete on any part of the course. This will result in both athletes being disqualified.

The performances of Learmonth, 31, and Taylor-Brown, 25, so impressive was they had to battle through extreme heat in Japan’s capital, with temperatures rising well above 30C and the humidity pushing above 80% despite a 7.30am the start.

The conditions were so severe that organizers had earlier split the distance of the running section to five kilometers. Even with those protections the French athlete, Cassandre Beaugrand, had to be taken to hospital with suspected heatstroke.

Both Learmonth, who is a European, Commonwealth and World Triathlon Series medal winner, and Taylor-Brown, who won a maiden World Triathlon Series race earlier this year, were too upset to speak afterward. Though, British triathlon’s national performance director, Mike Cavendish, admired their performances.

Holland, who won an Olympic bronze at the Rio Olympics in 2016, rebounded Cavendish’s comments. I really feel for Jess and Georgia because they raced extremely well and I feel like they absolutely smashed it and deserved the first and second finish, I don’t know how British Triathlon will choose things now. I wouldn’t want to be a selector.

A British Triathlon spokesperson confirmed that all three British athletes are likely to have to wait until next May to find out whether they have been chosen for the Olympics, although an initial selection meeting will be held in October.

It is the cutting-edge of Tokyo 2020 Olympic test events to highlight concerns over the sizzling summer temperatures that can be expected at next year’s July 24-Aug. 9 Games.

Rising temperatures have killed at least 57 people across Japan since late July, highlighting the possible health hazard to athletes and fans. Tokyo 2020 spokesman Masa Takaya said lessons would be learned from the triathlon event.

Olympic Triathlon: Triathlon changes add to Tokyo 2020 Olympics’ heat headache

“The International Triathlon Union informed Tokyo 2020 Olympic that a broad review is necessary soon after the competitions this week. Tokyo 2020 Olympics’ partnership with the International Triathlon Union led to the implementation of measures to fight summer heat, including change of races start time, reviewed heat stress protocols, specially trained peoples and extra water stations on the course.”

In this deference, we will continue to work closely together with the team. The swimming and cycling segments remained the same after the International Triathlon Union estimated the water quality and temperature in the Odaiba Marine Park course to be within regulation. Thursday’s triathlon race, though, is another setback for Tokyo 2020 Olympic organizers, following a difficult period of test events.

Several athletes were treated for heatstroke at the 2019 World Rowing Junior Championships in Tokyo, which was another test event. There were also complaints from spectators at the lack of protection from the sun, as the venue was constructed with the roof only covering about half of the 2,000 seats.

The decision was made in 2016 to reduce the size of the roof at the newly-built venue as an economizing measure by Tokyo Metropolitan Government.

“We will not be changing the venue in any way and will not be increasing the size of the stand cover before the Tokyo 2020 Olympics”.

At the swimming marathon test event last weekend, also held at Odaiba Marine Park, athletes complaining of a bad smell in the water. Tokyo 2020 organizers, though, said earlier this week the water quality was not an issue for the International Triathlon Union, who were prepared to let their test event to go ahead as scheduled.

Olympic Triathlon: Triathlon changes add to Tokyo 2020 Olympics’ heat headache

The test results for the previous week show that the water quality is good enough and that the number of E. Coli and enterococci are continuously well below the level of International Triathlon Union criteria.

In addition, they would install more filtering screens ahead of the Games to those already in place after 2017 tests showed levels of E. Coli up to twenty times above the accepted limit and fecal coliform bacteria seven times higher. The single-layer underwater screens installed in Tokyo Bay have helped diminish the bacteria, according to organizers. For the coming year, we will install triple-layer screens to assure the successful delivery of the competitions.

Olympic Triathlon Test Event: France edges Great Britain in Tokyo Test Event Mixed Relay

ITU World Triathlon Mixed Relay Series Tokyo event, in essence, the test event for next year’s Tokyo Olympics, provided lots of excitement as France’s Dorian Coninx managed to out-lean Great Britain’s Alex Yee for the win, with the United States rounding out the podium.

For a while it looked like Great Britain might be able to run away with the race as Jessica Learmonth put together a stellar first leg. After leading out of the water, Learmonth (who was no-doubt a bit motivated after having her win at Thursday’s individual race taken away when she was DQd for tieing with countrywoman Georgia Taylor-Brown) joined forces with American Summer Rappaport for part of the bike, then broke away with a half a lap to go to solo into the second transition and lead the way onto the run with a 15-second lead on Rappaport and about 30 seconds on the chase pack that included Germany’s Laura Lindemann and France’s Cassandre Beaugrand.

Those two would scream through the run to catch Rappaport by the handoff, but Learmonth had put the Brits up by just over 20 seconds at that point. Gordon Benson kept the Brits in front through his leg, but by then a pack of four were chasing hard including France, Italy, USA, and Germany.

For a while it looked like Belgium might get into the mix as Jelle Geens managed to join the chase group as the women started the third leg it was Great Britain out in front with France, Belgium, USA, Italy, and Japan.

The other woman involved in that “tie then DQ” race on Thursday, Georgia Taylor-Brown, managed to hold her lead through the swim, but on the bike, France’s Leonie Periault and American Tamara Gorman managed to make some inroads on the bike and run to get things close.

So, starting the final leg it was Great Britain in front by a second over France, with the Americans five seconds down. Italy was now in no man’s land, 27 seconds behind, with Australia another 20 seconds back.

The final leg saw France’s Coninx power to the front in the water, but as they hit the transition he, Yee and American Ben Kanute were all together. Coninx and Kanute did all they could to try and breakaway on the bike, no doubt fearful of the fast-running Yee, but try as they might all three were together into the second transition.

Once on the run Yee immediately went to the front. Coninx stayed on his shoulder, but Kanute was dropped quickly. At the end of the first of the two one-km run loops the pair had 16 seconds on Kanute – it was clear this was going to be a two-man race for the gold.

Yee made his move with about 300 m to go and seemed to open a gap, but as they hit the final 100 m Coninx found another gear and managed to move next to the young Brit, then managed to get his chest ahead to give France the win.

Water quality at Odaiba Park is set to be the main challenge for the athletes who are due to compete over the four days. Some competitors criticized the quality of the water during the marathon swimming test event at the same venue earlier this week.

The International Swimming Federation (FINA) and the International Triathlon Union (ITU) voiced similar concerns in 2017 after a survey revealed it was not good enough to meet their required standards.

Fears have been allayed since following the publication of improved results last year, while FINA Medical Committee member David Gerrard claimed during the open water swimming test event that “daily readings had given us a clear indication of good water quality”.

But Tokyo 2020 will still be keeping a close eye on the standard of the water during the ITU World Olympic qualification event. The ITU has also implemented a series of measures for the competition, which begins with the women’s race tomorrow, to help protect athletes from the expected high heat and humidity.

The start times of the races have been brought forward, while athletes will benefit from air-conditioned areas before and after the competition. Extra water stations will be installed at the venue and competitors will be allowed to wear cooling vests until their official introduction.
