FINA Proposes Addition of High Diving For Olympic 2020 Games

FINA, the international governing body for 6 disciplines of aquatics sports, has put forth a proposal to add high diving to the Olympics 2020 in Tokyo, Japan. Olympics Diving Followers from all over the world can buy Olympics Diving tickets online.

High diving, which FINA considers a different discipline from the more traditional indoor, springboard and platform diving, involves divers leaping from heights over twice as high.

A standard high diving apparatus includes a 5-meter platform, a 10-meter platform, a 20-meter platform, and a 27-meter platform. At impact, divers are traveling over 50 miles per hour – so the dives are all feet-first, rather than head-first.

FINA Proposes Addition of High Diving For Olympic 2020 Games

The discipline was added already to the 2013 FINA World Aquatics Championships offering and is contested at the wildly-popular Red Bull Cliff Diving series. FINA made the announcement of their request at the start of the 4th edition of the FINA High Diving WC in Abu Dhabi this week.

“It’s a dream for all of us for many years now! Every athlete’s aspiration is to be able to participate in the Olympics 2020 one day. People say High Diving is a very dangerous sport, but for the ones that are within the sport, we know that we can control those challenges. We have now a good image and the entry in the FINA programmed definitively helped a lot”, explains the Colombian, first FINA world champion in 2013.

If the IOC approaches high diving as a new sport, rather than an added discipline to regular diving, then it would first need to receive as a sport by the IOC. Many sports receive recognition but are not competing at the Olympics 2020 – like bowling and chess.

The IOC can then choose to admit it to the Olympics 2020 as either a sport, a discipline (branch of a sport), or an event.

FINA Proposes Addition of High Diving For Olympic 2020 Games

“This would generate additional respect for our discipline. When we started within FINA, four years ago in Barcelona, we were a kind of ‘circus’ artists, a bunch of crazy people. Now, within Aquatics, this perception has widely changed, so I think that the Olympic 2020 factor could give the definitive value to High Diving to the general world”.

FINA’s biggest challenge to overcome would be the Olympic 2020 Charter standards of inclusion. According to that charter, to be accepted, that sport must be “widely practiced” by men in at least 75 countries on 4 continents and by women in 40 countries on 3 continents.

High diving would likely clear most of the other hurdles. It would have to increase the “value and appeal” of the Olympic 2020 Games, which crowds at the cliff-diving series indicate it would; and must not be a purely “mind sport” or dependent on mechanical propulsion.

Olympic Diving Tickets
FINA Proposes Addition of High Diving For Olympic 2020 Games

On balance, high diving’s only route to the Olympic 2020 at present would be as an added event or discipline, but even then, the IOC would likely challenge FINA to prove it as a truly-global competition. At the 2015 World Aquatics Championships, only 20 men from 12 countries and 10 women from 7 countries competed.

David Boudia Qualifies For Tokyo 2020 Olympics

The U.S. locked up two more Olympic quota acnes for Olympic 2020 after David Boudia and Michael Hixon. Olympic Diving Followers from all over the world can buy Olympic Diving tickets online.

Advanced to the men’s 3-meter finals at the FINA WC.  Boudia was fourth and Hixon 12th in Wednesday’s semifinal to move on to Thursday’s final and qualifies the United States for the Olympic 2020 Games.

David Boudia Qualifies For Tokyo 2020 Olympics

Boudia and Hixon made it through a four-hour, 57-diver preliminary and then came right back for the semifinal. Boudia finished the semis with 464.20 points, while Hixon qualified with 428 points for the last spot into the final.

“Clearly a huge goal coming here was to get top 12 and that gets us the Olympic spots for the team. It was a battle all day. I don’t think you can have a more difficult challenge in diving than when you have a four-hour prelim and then an hour and a half later have to turn around and dive in the semis,” Hixon said. “I think everyone’s pretty exhausted, but it was good to get out of there with the spots.”

Boudia scored 70 points or higher on all six dives, with his last two – a reverse 3 ½ tuck and a reverse 1 ½ with 3 ½ twists – each going for 84 points. A four-time Olympic medalist in platform events, Boudia stepped up to challenge as he continued his transition to springboard with his eye on making a fourth Olympic team.

He lacked the degree of difficulty that many of his competitors had but still finished fourth in the semifinal. Of the 12 divers advancing to the final, Boudia was the only one who didn’t perform a front 4 ½ tuck. Seven divers advancing to the final had at least two dives with a degree of difficulty of 3.6 or higher on their lists; Boudia had none.

“I think it definitely helps boost my confidence to know where I stacked up. I wasn’t training super amazing, but I also know I was fourth in the semifinals and I don’t have the big DD dives yet. This fall, that’s what we’ll be focused on and hopefully then there won’t be an 80-point gap between first and fourth,” Boudia said.

And though Boudia was close to final in the top three in the semifinals, a medal isn’t necessarily his goal at his first World Championships in a 3-meter event.

“It was a long day, but we got the job done. Both Mike Hixon and I got the spots for the United States, so tomorrow we just go into finals and see what we can do,” Boudia said. “It was a good learning experience today and then (in finals), it’s anyone’s game. Honestly, I have no expectations. Obviously, the top three would be great, but my goal coming into this was getting a spot for the United States.”
