Olympic Boxing: Youth Olympic cheer for GB

Great Britain’s boxing medal record has been very good at the three summers Youth Olympic held so far, with three golds and three bronze leaving them behind Cuba and Russia. The inaugural Games were held in Singapore in 2010 and GB had one male boxer qualify for the event in Welsh bantamweight Zack Davies, who lost in the third-place bout to Poland’s Dawid Michelus 12-7.

Unlike the regular Olympic, only one bronze medal is awarded at the Youth Games, but it was a very creditable performance from Davies. The 2014 Games in Nanjing meant China became the first country to stage both the regular Olympic (Beijing 2008) and Youth Olympic. GB had three male boxers who had qualified and two delivered bronze medals, although Hackney’s Viddal Riley missed out.

The under-81kg division as he lost out a split decision 2-1 to Armenia’s Narek Manasyan in the third-place bout. Nonetheless, it was again a very good performance from our local man and, in the under-52kg category, Muhammad Ali (how could he not succeed with a name like that?) secured a bronze medal after losing his semi-final to Shakur Stevenson, the eventual gold medalist from the USA. Ali, he bounced back to win the third-place contest by clearly outpointing India’s Gaurav Solanki to cement a fine tournament overall.

Peter McGrail also won bronze in the under-56kg class, after losing his semi-final encounter with Cuba’s eventual gold medalist Javier Ibanez Diaz. McGrail regrouped to outpoint Algeria’s Tamma Salem in their third-place bout to seal another fine display in this very tough and competitive tournament. At Buenos Aires in 2018, GB had outstanding success in the ring, with no fewer than three gold medals and a bronze for good measure.

GB won its first-ever gold medal in these Games through Ivan Hope Price with a first-round stoppage of Thailand’s Sarawut Sukthet in the final of their under-52kg encounter. Not to be outdone, Slovakian-born Karol Itauma won GB’s second gold medal with a 4-1 points success over Russia’s Ruslan Kolesnikov and a bronze medal went to Hassan Azim at under-64kg. Although outpointed in his semi-final by the eventual Olympic champion from Russia Ilya Popov, Azim regrouped to stop Morocco’s Mohammed Boulaoja in the third-place bout.

For the first time at these Games, GB fielded a female boxer in the form of Londoner Caroline Dubois in the 60kg division. Older brother Daniel is already a multi-titled professional champion and tipped by many pundits as a future world heavyweight champion. Caroline won her three bouts in Buenos Aires with identical 5-0 scores, including her final triumph over Thailand’s Porntip Buapa to become the first British female boxer to both enter and then win a gold medal at the event.

She remains undefeated with a 40-0 record and, besides her Youth Olympic success, has also won three European Junior Championships, a World Youth Championship, a European Youth Championship, and two English National Youth Championships.

Caroline in her first bout as a senior in the lightweight division outpointed Ala Staradub of Belarus in her opening bout at the Tokyo Olympic Qualifying tournament at the Copper Box Arena last month. The event was then curtailed due to the coronavirus pandemic before she could meet Finland’s Mira Potkonen in her next qualifying contest.

But it should be noted that Potkonen derailed reigning Olympic lightweight champion, Katie Taylor, in Rio in 2016, when the Irishwoman was hoping to defend her the crown she had won at the London 2012 Games. We await further details of how and when this qualifying tournament will re-commence, given that the Tokyo Olympic have been postponed until the summer of 2021.

Olympic Boxing: Chantelle Cameron has finally opened up on her Olympic heartbreak

It’s a subject that’s been too painful to properly address up until now, but Chantelle Cameron (12-0, 7KOs) has finally opened up on her Olympic anguish. The Northampton fighter was a long-time star of the Team GB set-up but was controversially overlooked for the 2016 Rio Olympic.

Olympic lovers from all over the world are called to book Olympic 2020 tickets from our online platforms for Olympic Tickets. Olympic Boxing lovers can book Olympic Boxing Tickets from our ticketing marketplace exclusively on reduced prices.

That crushing disappointment was followed by a near-fatal health problem and now, on the brink of huge world title fights as an unbeaten professional, 28-year-old Cameron tells the story of the lowest moments of her life for the first time in a special. Wham Bam Chan’ admitted, Not qualifying for that Olympic was simply one of the hardest things I’ve gone through. It was horrible.

The whole team qualified apart from me and the fact I’d already beaten lots of the girls who went broke my heart. Everyone was asking what happened afterward and I just shut myself in my room for two weeks. People were very worried about me. I’d made so many sacrifices for four years – continuous training. I had no social life because I was so determined to go to the Olympic. I felt cheated out of it because of my style.

I did not want anything to do with boxing after that. I didn’t watch any of the Olympic. The thought of boxing made me physically sick. I still loved fighting. I went back to the kickboxing gym but I realized it’s not the same. I was in love with boxing even though it broke my heart. I felt like I’d let my family down and my town down.

If I was going to leave boxing, I wanted to leave with a major medal. I couldn’t leave with anything. The plan was to win that and then just walk away. I went to the Europeans calmed and relaxed. I boxed brilliantly and boxed a Russian’s head off. I laughed when they raised her hand. It was a joke. Then I nearly died. I didn’t realize I had septicemia. I ended up in the hospital for a week and I had to have it cut out.

I was still on Team GB but I had a pump strapped to my leg. It was three months of doing nothing. I opted to go into professional boxing. I thought I’d have a go and I immediately loved it. When I’m in camp, I’m fully dedicated – as much as any professional. Outside of camp, I like to have fun these days. I have to enjoy myself because I remember how depressed I was over the Olympic disappointment. Boxing is a sport for me and I’m having fun now. I go in there to destroy opponents because I don’t want to leave things to judges.

I have a love-hate relationship with boxing. It’s a rollercoaster with lots of ups and downs. You may want to quit when the downs come but if you persevere, you can be a champion. The sport destroyed me mentally and physically and I had no idea what my purpose in life was. I thought it was my be-all and end-all.

My family tell me that every time I’ve been knocked down I get up stronger than before. The advice I’d give to youngsters is that this is a sport and you should enjoy it. You can’t lose the fun factor. I made that mistake before and it became a chore and made me miserable. I’m doing this for fun and to secure my future. If it doesn’t work out, I’m still going to be healthy and breathing. I’d just have to find a new chapter.

This is my last chance to make it work and I’m giving it everything. Joining Jamie’s stable has brought the fun back. I don’t even feel like I’m in camp. I’m training hard and putting so much work in but it’s fun. I used to hate and dread training but now I enjoy getting up and going to Jamie’s gym. I’m learning and improving because I’m relaxed. I’m enjoying boxing again.

Jamie and Nigel are very positive so when I joined with my confidence was low, doubting myself, they motivated me to push on. It’s a great team to be around. After boxing, I want to become a PE teacher. I’m currently trying to get on to a university course. I plan to study alongside my boxing career. I’ve always wanted to be a PE teacher and then, of course, there are good holidays you get!

The tournament, the final of four continental qualifiers, was due to run from March 26-April 3 in Buenos Aires but was called off after the Argentine government canceled all international events in the country a bid to prevent the spread of coronavirus. USA Boxing has offered to stage the rearranged Americas Olympic qualifying boxing tournament in Colorado Springs should Argentina decide not to go ahead with the event.

The Tokyo Olympic has now been put back to the summer of 2021. So far two qualification tournaments have been completed – the Africa and Asia/Oceania events – while the European qualifier in London was suspended after three days.

It is understood that the Boxing Task Force, which is running Olympic boxing on behalf of the IOC after AIBA was barred, will hope to reschedule the European and Americas events for before Christmas, allowing the final world qualifier for anyone who does not make it through the continental events – which was due to have taken place on the outskirts of Paris in May – to be held early next year.

The Argentina organizers will be given the option to restage the Americas tournament, but should they be unable to hold the event, USA Boxing has offered to put it on near their Colorado Springs headquarters. They had previously offered after the Argentinian event was initially called off.

When the London tournament was suspended, UK Sport, the government funding body that backed it, expressed an interest in staging the remainder of the event, although no decisions are likely until the worldwide lockdown finishes. So far, 114 boxers have booked their place at the Tokyo Olympic. They have all been assured that their places are safe.

Will several Olympic Boxing hopefuls now look to turn pro?

With the postponement of the Tokyo Olympic for July, the next logical question for a couple of prominent men’s amateur boxers is when will they turn pro? And, might that be later this summer, instead of waiting for whenever the Olympics can happen? Arguably, the most prominent U.S. fighter is Norfolk, Virginia native, Keyshawn Davis. And, the 21-year-old amateur star in the 138 lb. division put on social media Tuesday that he’s looking to get paid to fight.

Further, Davis (above), a former national Golden Gloves champ (2017) who was second at last year’s World Championships and Pan American games, talked to ESPN.com boxing insider, Steve Kim. And, he elaborated on his social media post about the intrigue and possible timeline for turning pro.

I’m not going to even lie; I was thinking about the Olympic since I was 7 years old before I even started boxing. I didn’t even know what I wanted to be in the Olympic for, I just wanted to do it. I honestly thought I would be in the Olympic for the track.

There’s a lot of people saying that I already fight with no headgear, why waste another year fighting with no headgear in the amateurs, risking getting cut and stuff like that? I already have big options of going pro and being more well off than I am now.

Olympic Hospitality |Olympic 2020 Tickets | Olympic Tickets | Olympic Packages| Tokyo Olympic Tickets
Olympic Hospitality |Olympic 2020 Tickets | Olympic Tickets | Olympic Packages| Tokyo Olympic Tickets

There’s no rush to make that decision as all professional sports worldwide have ground to a halt for at least the foreseeable near future. Further, Davis’s marketability would go up, if he could win a Gold Medal in the delayed Tokyo Olympic.

This is something that helped former recent fighters’ careers like Andre Ward, who won Gold in the 2004 Athens Games. And, the most prominent case is going all the way back to Oscar De La Hoya winning Gold in the 1992 Barcelona Summer Games that launched his early pro career and huge money for fights early. Back to Davis, he’s arguably the most decorated fighter on the Team USA Squad that had to cancel their Olympic qualifying tournament for Argentina that was scheduled.

However, there are at least two other prominent names to also keep an eye on as to whether they will stay as amateurs or because of the limbo of Tokyo Olympic, go ahead and potentially turn pro like Davis? The world caught up to the United States in amateur boxing and medals have been hard to come by. The last male to win an Olympic medal was Deontay Wilder taking Bronze in the 2008 Beijing Fames.

They are 20-year-old Super Heavyweight Richard Torrez of Tulare, CA, who is a former National Golden Gloves champ and was third in the Pan Am Games last year. Plus, there’s 21-year-old Welterweight Delante “Tiger” Johnson of Cleveland, Ohio, who a former National Junior Olympic champ and was also third in the Pan Am Games last year.

USA Boxing has been prominent going back to Muhammad Ali has won a Gold medal in 1960 and coming forward to the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Games that had the likes of Mark Breland, Mildred Taylor, Henry Tillman and Pernell “Sweet Pea” Whitaker all winning gold that year.

Olympic Boxing: Three Boxers sent to Amman for Tokyo Olympic Qualifiers

The ministry for Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC), which handles sports matters, did not even provide facilities to national fighters for training. The PBF required to send a full-fledged squad to Jordan but financial matters and lack of sponsors hurt its cause. They had to train at the Army Sports Complex, Rawalpindi, for a couple of months.

The PBF early this month had requested Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) to provide hostel facilities to national fighters in Peshawar so that they could train in a different environment for a few days but the Board did not respond.

“Yes, we aimed to field more boxers but could not do so as sponsors also did not back us despite hectic efforts, PBF secretary Col Nasir Tung told ‘The News’. Now we have decided to send three boxers, Mohammad Asif (52kg), Gul Zeb (69kg) and Mehmood-ul-Hasan (75kg), for the Jordan qualifiers. Arshad Hussain will be associated with the squad as a coach,” Nasir said.

There was a need to fielding a full-fledged squad which could have boosted the country’s qualifying chances for the Tokyo Olympic. This correspondent tried to contact senior officials of the PSB but they were not available for comments. Asia and Oceania qualifiers are very important.

He also revealed that the squad would leave for Jordan. Nasir also skipped the Asian boxing forum slated to be held on March 6 on the sideline of the qualifiers to ensure boxers’ presence in the qualifiers. I have managed some money from my own pocket and borrowed some from friends to ensure Pakistan’s participation in the event. We have done our best with the available resources. I still expect positive results.

He was quick to add that it all would depend on the draws. If we got good draws, then things could go in our favor. In the 52kg there are six seats at pole while in the 69kg and 75kg there are five seats up for taking. The qualifiers are being contested in eight weight groups. National boxers will also have a chance of pressing for Tokyo Olympic seats when they feature in the World Qualifying round in Paris in May.

The inability of the IPC Ministry to run sports has also dented the Olympic 2020 chances of the country’s top wrestlers. Since the government of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) emerged in the summer of 2018 Pakistan’s sports graph has gone down.

Because of a lack of finances, Pakistan also skipped the Asian qualifiers for volleyball despite having qualified for the event. So far five players in different disciplines have made it to the Tokyo Olympic to be held this summer in Japan.

Olympic Boxing: On the road with Gambia’s Olympic boxing hopefuls

During four millennia, Africans have sought fame and wealth through boxing. Ten centuries before the sport first appeared at the 23rd Olympiad, in 688 BC, Egyptian painters depicted boxers in the tombs of Merry-Ra and El-Minia.

In February, when three Gambian boxers, their officials, and your correspondent – a coach with the team – traveled by bus to the dusty outskirts of Dakar, Senegal, we were following an ancient tradition: to try to get to the Summer Games. We were joined by Africa’s toughest fighting men and women, who were preparing to compete in the Africa section of the Tokyo Olympic Qualification Tournament.

In the minibus was Gambia’s team captain, 27-year old Foday Badjie. A resilient and explosive former professional, he had just rejoined the amateur ranks. His was a tough background: a number of his neighborhood friends had tried to reach Europe over the last five years, some drowning during the perilous Mediterranean crossing. Others had returned steeped in failure and debt.

His compatriot Musa Cham had just returned from the Bronx, having left Gambia as a boy. He stared out of the bus window as the lush fields of the Sine-Saloum Delta gave way to the Saharan sands and parched landscapes of Senegal. A lightweight with a snappy jab, quick footwork and the ability to pivot like a ballerina, Cham had only been boxing for three years.

We arrived at the disappointing news that South Africa’s team hadn’t made it. Nor had the Nigerians, once again. The sports ministries of Africa’s two largest economies – and proud boxing nations – had failed to find the funds to get their boxers abroad. This was the same week that Nigerian ministers welcomed Anthony Joshua to Lagos, and tried to claim him as one of their own. For Africa’s devastating young boxers, four years of blood, sweat, and tears had been wasted.

It didn’t take long to realize I wouldn’t cut it in the professional ranks. Needing balm for my bruised ego and nose, I turned to the words of another fellow amateur boxer, Nelson Mandela, who told I was never an outstanding boxer. I was in the heavyweight division, and I had neither enough power to compensate for my lack of speed, nor enough speed to make up for my lack of power. Unbowed by my painful induction, I started coaching in the Gambia after filming Badjie for a documentary.

But boxing can be an unforgiving sport, and the Tokyo Olympic Qualification Tournament brutally exposed weakness. Sandy Sam got stopped by Congo’s Maroy Sadiki in the first minute of the preliminary round as the pressure of fighting in the 15,000 capacity Dakar Arena overwhelmed his pre-fight tactics. Sam walked back to the changing rooms with the sounds of vuvuzelas – and Sadiki’s fists – ringing in his ears.

Elsewhere, the continuation of the historic rivalry between the North African nations and their sub-Saharan opponents continued unabated. The nip and tuck of Algerian and Moroccan fighters – who secured 13 of the 33 places on offer – habitually get the better of their foes from the tropics, and this year was no exception.

Perhaps the greatest story emanated from Zambia. The nation took three young boxers to Senegal, and all qualified in style in the stadium at Diamniadio, the futuristic city built to ease congestion in Dakar. Flyweight Patrick Chinyemba boxed in an unorthodox, frantic style. His hands held high and outwards, shifting rhythmically from side-to-side, he relied on youthful reactions as he joyfully boxed his way to the final.

As for Badjie, the late evenings and meal times at the hotel taught us all a lesson, as he failed to make weight one morning by 1kg. He might get one final opportunity in Paris, in May, at the World Qualifiers, if the money to get him there can be found. If it is, he’ll be joined by Senegal’s best boxer, whose pre-bout routine was interrupted by an Olympic official who refused the fighter’s bid to tuck a magical amulet inside his shorts.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Fiston Mulumba was on the wrong end of a controversial decision as he was beaten by Morocco’s Abdelhaq Nadir in the box-off for the last remaining Olympic spot at lightweight.

According to the Olympic 2020 Channel, Nadir overcome by the narrowest of split conclusions as the Moroccan and Mulumba were each given the win by one judge. The other three all scored it level at 28-28, at least two of which awarded Nadir the bout on countback.

Richarno Colin of Mauritius ousted Namibia’s Jonas Jonas to claim the lightweight gold medal. Tetteh Sulemanu became the first Ghanaian boxer to qualify for Tokyo Olympic as he defeated Juliano Maquina of Mozambique in the men’s flyweight box-off.

Sulemanu recorded a 4-1 split decision victory to book his ticket to this year’s Games in the Japanese capital.
