If they don’t protect an Olympic place in November, the next qualifying tournament will occur in March.

Vaughn, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2019 flow, is one of the top views in the White Sox system. MLB Channel ranks him 3rd in the system and No. 21 in baseball. The White Sox violently pushed him finished three levels of the minors after he got drafted, culminating in a 29-game stint with Single a Winston-Salem.

Vaughn could start next season in Double-A and if all lines up flawlessly for him, he could even make the White Sox schedule some time in 2020. This competition offers strong contest for him during his first offseason as a specialist.

Women’s Baseball World Qualifier: Canada falls in aslant loss to the USA

Women’s Baseball World Qualifier: Canada falls in aslant loss to the USA

The squad from north of the border notched eight hits in the matchup, the offense led by multi-hit games from 16-year-old Ellie Jespersen and 21-year-old Kelsey Lalor, but couldn’t solve the American pitching any further. Team Canada’s staff was undone by eight-run frames from the USA in both the fourth and seventh to dig into a hole too deep to climb out of.

“It’s a wakeup call,” Canadian manager Aaron Myette said. “We were chatting before the game about how we came out flat yesterday, and then we came out a little flat today, lacking intensity. As a group, what we can take away from that is that we need to be on point for every game.

“We’ve got to be prepared and not just come in and hope that we get things started later in the game. We’ve got to start from the minute we show up to the park, be mentally prepared and focused on each game.”

The Americans scored 21 runs on 23 hits, also capitalizing on five walks and four errors from the Canadian national team to earn their fourth straight victory of the qualifier, while Canada moves to 3-1 in the tournament.

“They’re a fantastic team,” Myette said of the USA. “They have a ton of good arms and a very strong lineup. The runs and hits speak for themselves. They hit balls hard today, and you have to give them credit for hitting pitches hard. We made a lot of mistakes and got away from our strengths and our game plan, and pitched into their strength and their game plan. That’s an adjustment we have to make.”

Amanda Asay got the start for the Canadian squad and the 14-year national team veteran allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits with three strikeouts, before making way for two relievers.

The leader on a team with 10 different players from last year’s bronze-medal winning World Cup squad and eight players facing international competition for the first time, Asay hopes the young team can learn from Wednesday’s game to help it as it moves forward in the event.

Woman's Baseball Canada
Women’s Baseball World Qualifier: Canada falls in aslant loss to the USA

“Luckily, this came in the middle of the tournament,” Asay said. “It may be a devastating loss because of the score, but not so devastating in the standings, which is nice. It’s not the worst thing that we got to experience a loss before we came to the end of this tournament because it will be good to build from here and to have something to come away from and refocus us a little bit. Our game against Cuba didn’t go as smoothly as we would have liked, so this is a wakeup call that we can all take away from.”

Heading into Thursday’s matchup against Venezuela, before Team Canada takes on Puerto Rico and Mexico ahead of Sunday’s medal games, the squad’s skipper hopes his players can learn from the loss and quickly look ahead to what’s next.

“I’d like them to individually look at their performances and self-assess where they could have been more focused – that’s the first step,” Myette said. “As a group, they’ve got to understand they’re not going to go through their whole lives undefeated, but it’s about what we do now. We got our butts kicked, but it’s baseball.

“We have another game, we have another day, and we’re not out of this. We’re going to look at what we could have done better, make adjustments and come out stronger, more aggressive and more focused. The feeling we had today sucks, so we’re going to come to the park with the mentality that we’re not letting that happen again.”

Olympic 2020: Baseball is back in Olympic Sports after a long time

Baseball is back in Tokyo in an even bigger way in 2020 when baseball rejoins the Olympic program at the 2020 Games. “We’re happy it’s back in the Olympics,” said Jim Small, the MLB senior vice president international. “We think it’s only a good thing for baseball around the world.”

Olympic 2020: Baseball is back in Olympic Sports after a long time

That the sport’s 12-year absence from the Olympics will end there. Baseball is the most popular sport in Japan, and it has been for a long time.

“Baseball is still No.1 on polls,” a best-selling author who has written about Japanese baseball. “Here the sixty percent of people say baseball is their favorite sport,” said Robert Whiting.

Robert Whiting wrote baseball arrived in Japan in the 1870s, when a couple American teachers had their students play it. Then, in 1915, the Koshien high school baseball tournament began. More than a century later, Koshien remains one of the most popular events in Japan. It turns the teen players into national celebrities and draws sellout crowds with TV ratings sometimes as high as 60 percent. Whiting has described it as the country’s equivalent of the United States’ Super Bowl and World Series.

All the while, “America’s pastime” has forged deep bonds in the Land of the Rising Sun.

American major leagues have sent star players to Japan many times to play a series of games after the regular season ended, including way back in 1934, when Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig were on the trip. Those appearances were vastly popular, and Japan’s professional league started soon after.

The 2019 games drew very enthusiastic sellout crowds of more than 45,000 fans who would stand and cheer, with a great many wearing Ichiro Suzuki jerseys and holding up signs in his honor. The Mariners’ participation in the Tokyo series was no coincidence.

In 2001, the speedy Ichiro left his native Japan to join the Mariners, where he promptly won the MVP Award while leading Seattle to a record 116 wins. After five and a half seasons away from Seattle, Ichiro returned in 2018 and then retired after this year’s opening series in Tokyo.

Former pitcher Shigetoshi Hasegawa said that Ichiro is so popular in Japan that “he is not just a baseball player. He is like Madonna and Michael Jackson.”

No wonder, then, that there is an Ichiro museum in Nagoya where he grew up. There also are museums for Hideki Matsui and Daisuke Matsuzaka — other Japanese stars who followed Ichiro to MLB stardom — in other cities, just another example of baseball popularity there.

For all of the shared ties between Japanese and U.S. baseball, nowJapan has developed its own unique qualities, too. During their regular-season games, some Japanese fans will bang thunder stix, blow horns and sing in the organized rooting sections. During the Mariners-Athletics series, “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” was even being played at the subway stop next to the Tokyo Dome.

With that fan passion — and with Japan also guaranteed to compete in the sport with a host nation berth — the Olympic baseball games will certainly draw boisterous crowds as well. The games will be played at Yokohama Stadium, a nice, open-air ballpark that is roughly 20 miles outside of Tokyo, and Fukushima’s Azuma Stadium, which is 150 miles away.

Olympic Baseball Tickets
Olympic 2020: Baseball is back in Olympic Sports after a long time

The host country Japan will certainly be among the favorites in 2020.

Almost 60 Japanese players have come over to the U.S. to play in the majors, virtually all after Hideo Nomo signed with the Dodgers in 1995. The most popular of the current players is Shohei Ohtani, both a pitcher and hitter like Babe Ruth was in his early days, and who was last year’s Rookie of the Year for the Los Angeles Angels.

Because they have so good players, Japan has won two World Baseball Classic. But it has not won a gold medal at the Olympic Games, where MLB players haven’t participated, taking home two bronze medals and one silver.

One thing is for sure, though: The Japanese definitely will work hard to win gold, as they always do in baseball.

For instance, players in Japan are required to practice much longer and harder than players in the U.S. Some pitchers sometimes throw 300 pitches in a session each week, while there are fungo drills where fielders take 200 to 300 grounders, which can wear on a player.

“During spring training camp, it’s long, like nine or 10 hours,” said pitcher Yusei Kikuchi, who left the Seibu Lions and signed with the Seattle Mariners this winter. “The more that you perform and do well, though, the more freedom you get. You get your practice and work in, and that’s another motivator to get better.”

Japan could quite possibly win its first baseball gold medal. With many, many fans cheering madly.

Joe Girardi to Manage Team USA on the way to Olympics 2020

Joe Girardi is 54-year-old, Girardi works as an analyst for MLB Network. Baseball is back in the 2020 Summer Olympics to be staged in Japan, and Joe Girardi is back as manager of Team USA, with the ultimate goal of gaining a berth and then winning the tournament. Olympic Baseball Fanatics can book Olympic Baseball Tickets Online from our most economical online ticketing market place.

Picture
Joe Girardi to Manage Team USA on the way to Olympics 2020

“I look onward to leading Team USA as we struggle for a gold medal and look to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games,” he said in a statement.”

Girardi hasn’t managed since he was unceremoniously dumped by the New York Yankees after their seven-game loss to the Houston Astros in the 2017 American League Championship Series, replaced by the untried and inexperienced Aaron Boone.

He’s been a television baseball analyst since then, but managing is certainly in his blood. He was a very good one, winning the 2009 World Series as manager of the Yankees, and was named National League Manager of the Year in 2006 after his short stay with the then Florida Marlins. He was fired after that one season.

Girardi had a .562 winning percentage for his 10-year New York tenure, the highest of anyone managing in his era. As a former catcher, his ability to manage a bullpen and a pitching staff were second only to Bruce Bochy, now ending his 13-year stint with the San Francisco Giants and 25 years consecutive managing the Giants and San Diego Padres, who could still use him.

It would have been nice to have seen how Girardi might have fared with 2018, 100-win Yankees, who lost to Boston in a four-game AL Division Series when the pitching staff collapsed.

Boone has done a magnificent job this season patching together the often-injured Yankees, running away with the AL East. But manipulating a pitching staff is not his greatest attribute.

Be that as it may, Girardi is back in the game. And though he said Thursday morning during a short conference call that he’s not using his new job as a stepping stone to get back to the Majors, it certainly won’t hurt.

He’s following some greats as manager of the U.S. Olympic baseball team: Hall of Famers Tommy Lasorda and the late Frank Robinson, plus Davey Johnson, all had the job with many different results.

The Los Angeles Dodgers great managed the 2000 Team USA to its only Olympic gold medal in Sydney, Australia.

So just as when Girardi replaced Joe Torre as manager of the Yankees in 2008 after 12 consecutive playoff seasons, four World Series titles and six AL pennants, Girardi knows he has big shoes to fill.

“As far as following in some people’s footsteps, Tommy Lasorda has been a great ambassador for this game for a long, long time,” Girardi said about the now 91-year-old Lasorda who’s still a consultant for the Dodgers. “Whether it was a professional baseball or Olympic baseball.

“I had a chance to see Tommy last winter at the Italian American Hall of Fame. It was really an honor to see him. I hadn’t seen him in a while. Tommy has carried the torch for a long time so to follow in his footsteps is really pretty amazing.”

But there are just six teams going to this abbreviated 2020 Olympic baseball tournament and the U.S. must qualify first. As the host country, Japan earns an automatic spot.

Picture
Joe Girardi to Manage Team USA on the way to Olympics 2020

The route this time begins with a qualifying tournament this coming Nov. 2-17. The U.S. will face tough teams from host Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and The Netherlands in the preliminary round at Guadalajara, Mexico.

Failing to qualify was a fate that befell Robinson’s team in 2003 when the U.S. lost a single-elimination game to Mexico during a preliminary round in hot and rainy Panama. Thus, the U.S. was not represented in its native sport during the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece, where Cuba won it all.

Baseball hasn’t been in the Olympics since 2008 when South Korea won the gold and the U.S. captured the bronze under Johnson as a manager in Beijing, China.

The sport was dropped by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) ostensibly because Major League Baseball refuses to send its top players, a la the NBA and NHL.

For the NBA, it’s easy since the Summer Olympics are staged every four years during pro basketball’s offseason.

The NHL has taken two-week breaks in its own regular season for the Winter Olympics to accommodate the International Ice Hockey Federation.

Because of that, hockey and basketball always provide premier medal tournaments as countries around the world have become increasingly stronger.

Not so for Major League Baseball, which won’t take a break in its regular season to accommodate the Olympics and will still decline to send its best players, Girardi confirmed.

Baseball is back for the 2020 Olympics because the host country gets to pick a few of its own sports. And Nippon Professional Baseball is as big in Japan as MLB is in North America.

The Japanese have found a way around this problem by taking two players off the teams of each NPB team to stock its Olympic roster. NPB neither has to take a break in the season nor compromise the integrity of that season.

The Olympics and international baseball are the big winners. The future of baseball as an Olympic sport is uncertain beyond 2020 largely because MLB won’t change its stance.

“The player pool we’ll be picking from is known-40-man roster players,” Girardi said. “And we’re going to put together the best we can. That could include some young guys who have just signed and are very, very talented, and that could include some old guys who’ve been in the big leagues and taken off the 40-man rosters.”

“We have scouts all over the place looking to put this team together. We’re going to meet and talk about it and put the best team together we can.”

Perhaps just as important, Girardi said he’s committed to managing the club from Guadalajara to Tokyo, with one caveat: If a Major League team is interested in bringing him back into the fold, he can at least listen.

“I will hear them out. I have permission to hear them out,” he said.

USA Basketball Unveils Women’s National Team training plan ahead of Olympics 2020

With one year until the opening tip of the 2020 Olympic women’s basketball tournament, USA Basketball today unveiled a collaborative and expanded USA Women’s National Team program and training plan that will profit the evolution of women’s basketball across the nation and has the support of the WNBA and, most importantly, the backing of the members of the USA National Team.

Enthusiasts from all over the World can grab their Olympic Basketball Tickets from one of the best online ticketing market places.

USA Basketball Women's

The program features improved training occasions that will raise the USA National Team and its athletes domestically, and include ancillary events designed to inspire future female leaders and promote participation in women’s basketball at all levels.

USA Basketball has secured commitments from eight athletes from the 2019-20 USA National Team pool to participate in five of the team’s training segments that will take place between November 2019 and April 2020. USA Basketball will round out the training camp rosters with additional national team athletes as their schedules allow.

Headlining the program are longtime USA National Team members Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi who own a combined eight Olympic and seven FIBA World Cup gold medals and collaborated with USA Basketball on the expanded national team program.

“I’m very excited about this program,” said Bird. “It’s the right amount of training so we can gear up and get ready for the Olympics, and also it gives us the right amount of exposure where we can create some momentum heading into the Olympics. It’s not only about trying to win another gold medal, but it’s also about trying to win our seventh in a row, that’s the story. It gives us a chance to do all of those things, but above all, it gives us a chance to get together as potential Olympians and play.”

“As we know, every year it gets tougher,” said Taurasi, who first suited up for USA Basketball in 2000 on a U18 team. “Every competition gets a little bit harder. So, this is a great chance to train, be in competitive situations with a team that hopefully is going to Tokyo to win a gold medal.”

“This was something that, at this point in our careers we know how important it is to have a good, last hurrah and we brainstormed with a couple other players and put together a plan,” Taurasi added. “Carol and Jim were very receptive. I think they were actually more excited about the idea than we were. It’s just something that came together literally at dinner on a piece of paper with some crayons.”

Women’s National Team training

Also committed to USA Basketball for the five segments are three-time Olympic and 2010 World Cup gold medalist Sylvia Fowles 2016 Olympic and 2018 World Cup gold medalist Elena Delle Donne, two-time World Cup gold medalist Nneka Ogwumike 2018 World Cup gold medalist A’ja Wilson and US National Team follower Skylar Diggins-Smith and Chelsea Gray.

“The fact that USA Basketball is being out front in providing our USA National Team an opportunity to train for the Olympic Sports is something that should be tinted across the country,” said Dawn Staley.

head coach of USA National Team and the University of South Carolina. “The fact that resources are being put into a much-needed area in one, helping women stay closer to home with their families, two, we get to prep for the 2020 Olympic Games and three, it’s an opportunity to be leaders in an area which has been lacking for some time. I’m happy about it because it gives us more opportunity to prep, knowing that the windows get smaller and smaller as we get closer and closer to the Olympic Games for one reason or another. I’m super excited about it. I hope it develops into something that’s long-lasting because it’s needed. Plus, when we have the likes of Diana and Sue leading the way, it always makes for some great preparation.

“Over the past seven years probably is where it’s been felt the most with the lack of preparation time. Just finding windows to prep. This program gives us a chance to keep an essential group of players together and to build chemistry and cohesion while some of our other players who are in the pool are overseas playing. So, any little bit counts.”

“USA Basketball believes that this new Women’s National Team initiative will help continue to build awareness of the great legacy of the USA Women’s National Team,” said USA Basketball Chairman Martin Dempsey.  “We owe it to the next generation of young girls and young women who hope to represent their country in the USA Basketball uniform someday to keep these incredibly accomplished athletes and great role models at home and among them.”

“First of all, this program wouldn’t happen without the support of the athletes, USA Basketball Board, WNBA, NCAA, and other women’s basketball stakeholders,” said Jim Tooley, USA Basketball CEO. “I extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone involved for their support as our USA Women’s National Team goes for its seventh consecutive Olympic gold medal in 2020. Aside from preparing our national team for the Olympic Games, the objectives of this program are to amplify the profile of not only this team but women’s basketball as a whole. There is no better way to do that then with the best women’s basketball players in the world.”

“We are thrilled to collaborate with USA Basketball on this program to showcase these amazing athletes ahead of the 2020 Olympics,” said WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert. “This is a tremendous opportunity to bolster visibility for women’s basketball and have some of the WNBA’s top players remain in the United States for additional training.”

USA Basketball Women’s National team
USA Basketball Women’s National team

The USA National Team, which already has qualified for the 2020 Olympics, will take advantage of and participate in FIBA’s new Olympic qualification process, that provides nations with two windows of competition, Nov. 10-18, 2019, and Feb. 2-10, 2020. Olympic Team will be comprised of players from the 2019-20 USA National Team.

In support of growing interest in the sport of women’s basketball at all levels, while recognizing the opportunity for current student-athletes to compete against former college stars, the NCAA granted relinquishments to allow a member to compete in show games against the 2019-20 USA National Team.

Because of the cooperation by the NCAA and its member schools, prior to the two FIBA tournament windows, the USA National Team will compete in a series of exhibition games against some of the nation’s premier NCAA Division I programs, similar to the college tours conducted by USA Basketball teams ahead of the 1996, 2000 and 2008 Olympic Games. Over the course of those three tours, the USA earned a 39-1 record competing against a combined total of 30 different NCAA Division I teams. The complete game schedule will be announced at a later date.

USA Basketball will also work with the WNBA, NBA, NCAA, and USA Basketball Youth and Sports Development Division to provide the USA National Team athletes with additional opportunities to train and to promote and grow the game across the country.

Members of the USA National Team also will compete in the 2019 FIBA AmeriCup from Sept. 22-29 in Puerto Rico, and participating athletes for that competition will be identified as WNBA teams conclude their season.

USA Baseball claimed the top spot in latest WBSC Baseball World Rankings

“To be recognized by the WBSC as the preeminent baseball program in the world is a testament to all of the hard work that our athletes, coaches and USA Baseball staff have put into our national team programs,” said Paul Seiler, Executive Director and CEO of USA Baseball. “Our organization has celebrated unprecedented success in the past few years and we will continue to build on those achievements as we reach toward new heights.”

The WBSC Baseball World Rankings weigh a country’s National Team performance – from U-12 to Professional – in WBSC-sanctioned international competitions over a four-year period.

USA Baseball had its most successful year in 2017, setting a record for most annual Baseball World Ranking points amassed with 2,127. The U.S. swept through its international competition with gold medals at the World Baseball Classic, WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup, COPABE Pan Am U-15 Championships and the WBSC U-12 Baseball World Cup; in addition to the Academic, National Team has won all three of its international friendship tournaments against Chinese Taipei, Cuba, and Japan. First time in international baseball history a federation has won all of its international competitions in a calendar year.

Since 2015, USA Baseball has won five world championships, including being the reigning World Baseball Classic Champion, as well as the reigning world champions at the 12U and 18U age levels. In total, the U.S. has medaled in all 11 international tournaments it has participated in since 2015, winning seven gold medals, three silver medals, and one bronze.

Additionally, the Collegiate National Team has won six of eight international friendship series against Chinese Taipei (2-0-1), Cuba (3-0) and Japan (1-1) in that time frame, including winning the 5th Annual USA vs. Cuba International Friendship Series. In Cuba, it is the first-ever series victory on Cuban soil in the history of USA Baseball.

The USA Baseball Women’s National Team – currently ranked number three in the WBSC Women’s Baseball World Rankings – has also won two gold medals since 2015, highlighted by an 11-3 victory over Canada in the finals of the 2015 Pan American Games.
