Bryson and Pillage set the fastest time in the swimming pool to earn a lead they never relinquished as they surged to victory at the end of the run-shoot element at the University of Bath.

Their time of 1min 56.46sec for their 200m freestyle was the quickest by the ten nations competing and they built on that lead in the fencing section with 23 wins. Belarusian pair Ivan Khamtsou and Volha Silkina secured 21 wins to finish as runners-up and stay in contention for a podium end in the water polo game for the Olympic 2020.

Pillage and Bryson lengthy their lead in the riding event, approved just seven penalties as their rivals writhed. Sikina was thrown from her horse as the second-placed Belarusians hesitated and Lithuania were removed after four snubs for Dovidas Vaivada.

The lone clear rounds expired to Alicia Lichancova and Filip Lichanec from Slovakia but they selected 22-time penalties as Russia and Italy enthused into medal argument. Pillage and Bryson arrived at the final stage, the run-shoot, with a 40-second benefit and they were not ever in danger of being caught as they finished clear of their rivals for gold.

Olympic Boxing officials from Rio 2016 to be banned from Olympic 2020

Nobody of the 36 referees and judges used at the Rio 2016 boxing rivalry will be allowed to preside at Tokyo Olympic, an International Olympic Committee task force has supposed. Olympic admirers from all over the world are invited to book Olympic 2020 tickets from our online platforms for Olympic Tickets. Numerous judges and referees were sent home from Rio after a number of dubious decisions during the boxing tournament. At Tokyo Olympic, referees and judges will be picked from a pool of International Boxing Association (AIBA) certified officials, who have been reviewed to ensure they meet the criteria.

“The key objective of the IOC boxing task force is to safeguard the completion of the mission of delivering events, while putting the boxers first, and with see-through and credible generous results and fair play,” said boxing task force chair Morinari Watanabe.

An examination by the AIBA in 2017 found no interference in results and recommended that the Rio judges be reintegrated on a “case-by-case basis”, but the IOC’s new selection criteria have now ruled them ineligible for the Tokyo Olympic Games.

The task force said its decision followed discussions with athletes to increase clarity, transparency, and integrity in the selection process and officiating at the Olympics. Scores from all judges at the end of each round will also now be displayed publicly during qualifying competitions and the Games.

Irish bantamweight Michael Conlan, who supposed he was “robbed”, and Kazakhstan’s Vassiliy Levit lost bouts in which they both seemed to win comfortably during Rio 2016.

The bad verdict among many – analysis

The atmosphere before Conlan was toxic – the night before his bout the decision in the heavyweight final was bad. Russian Evgeny Tishchenko took that gold medal when he was awarded the verdict against Kazakhstan’s Levit. Conlan even acknowledges that the result in that final was dreadful, certainly as bad as his. After the first round of Conlan, when the shocking score was in, there was a growing ripple of discontent and disbelief inside the arena.

Some of the Irish boxers had the score, they got it to the angle. There was a shock – people saw then that something bad was happening. It was the validation of all the rumors that had been circulating. People in the radio and television media sections were removing their headsets, covering their microphones and shouting to each other things like: ‘Have they got the corners varied up?’ Nobody could trust it.

Contentious scoring decisions have contained in Olympic bouts in the past, notably when American Roy Jones Jr lost a 3-2 decision to South Korean fighter Park Si-hun at the 1988 Olympic Games. Great Britain’s Savannah Marshall lost out to Dutch fighter Nouchka Fontijn. One judge – Colombian Armando Carbonell – was one of those involved with the controversial Tishchenko heavyweight win and gave Fontijn all four rounds.

Elsewhere, American Gary Antuanne Russell also lost a light-welterweight quarter-final to Uzbekistan’s Fazliddin Gaibnazarov. When judges were sent home from the Games, Russell’s mother said: “It doesn’t change anything. It doesn’t change the decision. It means nothing to us.”

The IOC boxing taskforce said its decision not to use Rio 2016 judges in Tokyo was just one of a number of “measures aimed at increasing clarity, transparency and integrity”. In a 115-page document, it listed its regulations for boxing at the Games and clarified the factors considered when scoring about.

The number and quality of blows will be considered, as will a fighter’s ability to dominate a contest through “technical and tactical superiority. The task force will also evaluate “competitiveness”, which it states takes into account which boxer is “consistently trying to win through the entire bout”.

Rounds can be scored 10-9 if judged to be “close”, 10-8 if there is a “clear winner” and 10-7 if there is “total dominance”. It made clear around can still be judged as 10-9 and close even if a fighter faces a standing eight-count or is knocked down. Rounds, where neither fighter is knocked down or faces a standing count, can still be scored 10-8 or 10-7 if needed.

“It is often overlooked but Conlan won the third, I thought he won it clear. But, the verdict appears to have been sorted. There is an amazing picture at the end when the result is announced: Conlan is full of such rage that he doesn’t look like Michael Conlan, his face is distorted. It was a bad, bad afternoon.”

Olympic Modern Pentathlon: National Ranking competition kicks off countdown to Tokyo Olympic

As an incredible 2019 comes to an end, preparations are already well underway for the first event of Olympic 2020. A top field of athletes, including the likes of Joe Choong, Jamie Cooke, and Kate French, will kick off the new year with the National Ranking 2 Competition (Pentathlon) set to take place on Saturday 18th January at Pentathlon GB’s National Training Centre, the University of Bath.

Olympic fans from all over the world are invited to book Olympic 2020 tickets from our online platforms for Olympic Tickets. Olympic Modern Pentathlon fans can book Olympic Modern Pentathlon Tickets from our ticketing marketplace exclusively on discounted prices.

Several of the senior British contingents will be fresh off a warm-weather training camp and will be looking to build on the performances they laid down at the fiercely contested National Ranking 1 competition a few weeks ago, which saw Sam Curry and Joanna Muir secure their first ever British Championship wins. With the Tokyo Olympic on the horizon and a vast number of international competitions next year, a good performance will be crucial in cementing positions on the National Ranking list, which will feed forward to international selection.

January’s event is set to follow a similar format to the British Open Pentathlon (National Ranking 1), beginning in the fencing hall before moving to the pool, where, in-line with next year’s World Championships and the Olympic 2020 there will be a short course set up. The laser-run will then precede the ride at West Wilts Equestrian Centre – where it’s hoped another fine display of horsemanship will bring the competition to an exciting close.

With top athletes expected to travel from right across the country, it looks highly likely that January’s event will ensure the busy calendar of Olympic 2020 kicks off competitively! As a reminder, the deadline for entries for the National Ranking 2 Competition is Wednesday 8th January, at 2pm.

Olympic Eventing: Swiss Land ‘Final’ Tokyo Slot, But Team Chances Still Out There

Switzerland claimed the last Olympic team place for Olympic 2020 at the FEI Eventing Nations Cup final at Boekelo in the Netherlands on October 13th. Their squad has been coached since the winter by Andrew Nicholson and it certainly shows. They finished the best of the teams in the overall Nations Cup rankings not already bound for Tokyo Olympic.

Olympic fans from all over the world are invited to book Olympic 2020 tickets from our online platforms for Olympic Tickets. Olympic Eventing fans can book Olympic Eventing Tickets from our ticketing marketplace exclusively on discounted prices.

The Tokyo factor added an extra frisson to Boekelo’s traditionally lively end-of-season party. But Boekelo might not quite be the Tokyo last-chance, because “qualification” has a strange interpretation in equestrianism. You can be qualified AND ineligible simultaneously.

Despite all the format manipulation aimed at admitting new countries, Olympic hopefuls still have to meet the Minimum Eligibility Requirement (MER) before occupying the place they have supposedly clinched. And the MER deadline for the team contest – a minimum of three riders of prescribed competence – is approaching like an express train: December 31st.

For newbies China and Thailand, it’s a case of so near and yet so far! Those two countries won their region’s quota place at a special competition in Saumur, France in May, amid much fanfare from the FEI. But the competition was staged at the old two-star/new three-star level. Rather less public attention was drawn to enormous “ask” of now mastering the next level up in a matter of months: the MER requires one completion including a cross-country clear, at the new five-star long format, or two at the new four-star, a long and a short.

While I may have missed something on the FEI database, it looks like two Chinese eventers have obtained the MER so far, the experienced Alex Hua Tian who ran as an individual at Beijing 2008, and Liang Ryuji. Thailand has just one, Weerapat Pitakanonda – both he and Liang secured their MERs in under five weeks at their first four-star attempts in Europe this summer and, it has to be said, did so fairly comfortably. China has a further three rider’s half-way there with four-star short qualifications, and Thailand one.

There are 13 remaining opportunities to obtain Olympic MERs worldwide, largely at events in the Americas and Antipodes. Riders are now prohibited from chasing MERs within 24 days of starting a “Long” CCI cross-country or within 10 days of a “Short.” That is a new stipulation, preventing horses being over-run at last-minute competitions which have had a strange way of appearing in the calendar before previous Games.

But can China and Thailand, in all seriousness, achieve this? And if so, given the precarious nature of Eventing, can they feasibly keep four horses fit and well to start in Tokyo Olympic from such a minute pool of participants? China has invested all its effort in the pre-selected six based in Europe this year.

So at least one team place is likely to be back in the pot soon. Who benefits will be decided by the special Olympic rankings table – most likely northern European. The FEI will reallocate if needed by February 17th. Canada is maybe just a notch too far down this list. However, the top two competitors from the Group D Olympic Eventing ranking list will be invited to compete. The list is currently topped by Karl Slezak and Colleen Loach, but Holy Jacks-Smither is on her way to Les Etoiles de Pau CCI5*-L in hopes of improving her ranking.

I chatted about this with Alex Hua Tian, who seems pretty sanguine about China’s prospects for Olympic 2020 and looks at the long-term. The mere possibility of a team presence has, he says, already piqued interest at the national level, and if they don’t make Tokyo Olympic, the European experience has stood China’s embryo team in good stead for a crack at Paris 2024. He also reminded me that it took Japan (third in the Boekelo Nations Cup final) two Olympic cycles to develop the strength and depth to be competitive in time for Olympic 2020. Given the chance, other non-traditional nations can catch up quickly and see off some of the well-aired concerns about the dilution of quality.

Meanwhile, Boekelo’s customized version of the Olympic three riders/no drop-score system was unexpectedly entertaining. At least it seemed so to me compared with last year’s trials of the new Olympic 2020 format at Mill street (Ireland) and Strzegom (Poland;) they were so bewildering I thought my head would fall off.

The Boekelo teams all seemed determined to complete their original trio. But I still harbor fears that someone who has been a spectator for half the competition will end up mounting the team podium next year. We saw how real that possibility could be at Boekelo when New Zealand finished fourth out of 12 good squads, despite calling up their substitute after the dressage, having accepted 20 extra penalty points.

Jennie, of course, she is still shown as a non-completion on the individuals’ scoreboard, just the kind of contradiction that will make casual observers glaze over when watching Tokyo Olympic on TV. Diehard fans have been digesting the substitution formula for months, but still probably watched Boekelo with one eye on the “bluffers guides” thoughtfully published by Horse & Hound and Eventing Nation.

Even the FEI’s own press release about Boekelo says the scoring caused a lot of head-scratching! The Boekelo commentators certainly had difficulty trying to distill it to a few words – good luck explaining it on Twitter next year!

Olympic Hockey: Teams qualify for the Tokyo Olympic Games

Olympic 2020 qualification is in the basket for GB’s hockey sides nonetheless captain Hollie Pearne-Webb knows her squad has plenty more to offer ahead of Tokyo Olym pic. The women’s outfit needed a play-off qualifier to secure their place in Japan but a two-legged win over Chile ensured they will take their place at the top table next summer. Perfection has eluded them thus far and while they have an Olympic gold medal from Rio 2016 to defend, Pearne-Webb knows what has gone before won’t influence the future.

“This one a hard eight months ahead for us. We all famine to be on that plane to Tokyo Olympic, so rivalry and training are successful to be even more significant and harder than ever,” she said.

There’s going to be competition for those 16 places. We’ve got a different squad completely so our aims are based on us not looking back. We do not have any pressure just since we are the ruling champions. Nonetheless, I think all of us will want a gold medal so I think that will be our goal. I think to go into Rio people would have written us off and I think if probably if people were looking at it now they would think the same.

“Every single one of us in our squad knows we have so much more to give and over the next eight months we will try and develop that and there will certainly be an accidental of us receiving gold at Tokyo Olympic.”

Pearne-Webb and her side boasted a 3-0 lead from the first leg and pressed home their advantage, with Tess Howard getting the first goal of the second game within just four minutes. Rio hero Laura Unsworth doubled the advantage before Chile pulled a goal back, but it didn’t stop Mark Hager’s side from booking their place in Japan.

They’ll be joined by Danny Kerry and the men’s squad, who overcame Malaysia 9-3 on aggregate after winning the second game 5-2. Alan Forsyth’s hat-trick and a double from Sam Ward took them over the line – 31 years on from the Olympic gold-medal winning performance of Seoul 1988.

“There was a lot of pressure on me – all over social media I was being told I was on 99 goals, so it was hard,” Forsyth told BBC Sport.

“My mum was here on Saturday so I tried to get it done while she was here, but we got the win, that’s what matters. I don’t want to look back and be disappointed but I use not being selected for Rio [as motivation] every day – I missed one Olympics and I don’t want to miss another. Olympic Eventing: Pakistan’s Usman Khan achieves Tokyo Olympic qualification

Olympic qualification for Tokyo Olympic was very much the focus of a few riders at Wallaby Hill International in NSW, Australia this weekend where the CCI4*-L class provided an opportunity for riders still looking to qualify for Tokyo to gain an MER (Minimum Eligibility Requirements) qualifying result.

Olympic fans from all over the world are invited to book Olympic 2020 tickets from our online platforms for Olympic Tickets. Olympic Eventing fans can book Olympic Eventing Tickets from our ticketing marketplace exclusively on discounted prices.

Some of the riders in the CCI4*-L have already represented their country at an Olympic 2020 Games, with Australia’s Shane Rose winning and Amanda Ross in fourth place while New Zealand’s Clarke Johnstone finished second on Balmoral Sensation. But it was a horse and rider from a different FEI Olympic Group that we have been keeping a key eye on in the lead up to this event.

Pakistan’s Usman Khan has been based in Australia for 15 years and during this period his aim has been to qualify in Eventing for an Olympic 2020 Games. For many years we have seen him at events large and small around Australia and particularly in Victoria, where he is based

Lee Ibrahim (Pakistan Eventing stable manager/groom) at the 2018 Melbourne International 3 Day Event with Al-Buraq CCI2*. Lee, an Australian national, wore Pakistan’s traditional women’s dress Shalwar Kameez to present Al-Buraq when Usman had been excused from attending the first horse inspection due to his work commitments.

Usman had hoped to qualify with his grey mare Al Buraq but, horses being horses, things went awry early in 2019 and Usman had to find another horse and start again. The 12-year-old bay gelding Azad Kashmir (originally named Here to Stay) was previously competed by Belinda Isbister in Western Australia but Usman bought him in early 2019, took over the ride and had his first start in competition at Camper down in April where they finished sixth in the CCI2*-S on their dressage score.

Olympic Eventing Tickets |Olympic 2020 Tickets | Olympic Tickets | Olympic Packages| Tokyo Olympic Tickets

Unfortunately, things didn’t go as well at the Melbourne International 3 Day Event in June where Usman fell on cross country, prompting him to think about the time he needed to get to know his new horse and, at that point, Usman decided to quit his job as an IT Consultant to the Government and focus on his goal of qualifying for the Tokyo Olympic Games.

“You can’t (easily) compete against these guys,” says Usman “But you can do one thing. You can quit your professional job for the time being to try and focus on things that matter the most for at least the next 6 – 12 months”

Usman didn’t have a groom with him at Goulburn but fellow competitor Jane Robinson jumped in to lend a hand during the event. Usman says that Australians have been instrumental in helping him achieve his goals.

We caught up with Usman again in October at the Lynton Horse Trials in Goulburn where the organizing committee had generously agreed to run a CCI3*-L specifically for Usman and Azad Kashmir so that they could try and achieve an MER at this level, enabling them to compete at Wallaby Hill CCI4*-L, where a successful completion in December could provide Usman and Azad Kashmir with the vital MER for Olympic qualification.

We talked to Usman after his cross country run at Goulburn and filmed this interview, but he asked if we could wait to show it until after Wallaby Hill …’inshallah’.

Olympic Eventing Tickets |Olympic 2020 Tickets | Olympic Tickets | Olympic Packages| Tokyo Olympic Tickets

We were delighted to hear that Usman and Azad Kashmir completed the CCI4*-L at Wallaby Hill last weekend; they started with a good dressage score of 35.10, added just 2.8-time penalties on Mike Etherington-Smith’s cross country course to be in ninth place and, although they picked up 16 jumping penalties on the last day to drop to 13th, this was good enough to earn their MER and achieve Tokyo 2020 qualification – a huge achievement for Usman and Pakistan.

“It would be very chastening for us, as a nation, as a country, to compete at the Olympic 2020 Games,” says Usman, who is now one very big step closer.

While Redele had an unhappy day which saw her drop to 86th place, the opposition behind Blom remained largely Belgian or German. Home rider Virginie Caulier who finished seventh in the dressage on Hobama de la Baille Rouge moved up to a second-place with 30.80, having incurred just 0.40 in terms of penalties.

Meanwhile, Germany’s double Olympic team eventing gold medalist, Ingrid Klimke moved up to third on Scrabble 15 after incurring just 1.20 faults for a total of 31.00. France won last month’s team competition on home soil at Haras du Pin.
