Shooters eye continental glory and Tokyo Olympics 2020 quota spots at European Championship Shotgun

Top shooters will be active in Lonato del Garda again from tomorrow, as the Italian town stages the European Championship Shotgun. The event at the Trap Concaved shooting range comes hot on the heels of the World Championship Shotgun held there in July. Individual and team competitions are in trap double trap and skeet beginning tomorrow with qualification before the opening finals on Friday, September 6. Shooters competing at the continental event will be aiming not only for European glory but also for Tokyo Olympic 2020 quota places.

Two spots are available from the men’s and women’s individual trap and skeet for the Games in Japan’s capital next year. Action will continue in Lonato del Garda until September 16. The venue also staged last year’s inaugural Para-Trap Shooting World Championships, with an Opening Ceremony taking place today.

In total 401 shooters from 43 countries will take part in both senior and junior competitions on the programmer. The European Championships for rifle and pistol will be held at a separate venue but are also in Italy with Bologna playing host.

Competition there will take place between September 14 and 22. Nýdrle that arrived in Lonato having won the silver medal in the same discipline at last month’s European Games in Minsk hit 60 targets in the final to top the podium.

The Czech shooter ended the competition three in front of silver medalist Tammaro Cassandro part of the Italian squad which finished second in the team event at the 2018 World Championships in Changwon. Cassandro was 11 ahead of Britain’s Jeremy Bird, who did enough for the bronze medal with 46 targets.

The triumph for Nýdrle marked the biggest achievement of his career so far. Russian Zilia Batyrshina claimed the junior women’s skeet honors in the other final held today. Batyrshina secured the gold medal on 52 targets one more than Katharina Jacob of the United States could manage.

Jacob was forced to settle for silver by the narrowest of margins while Dutch shooter Esmee Van der Veen clinched bronze on 38 targets. The event is due to continue tomorrow.

Eight Shotgun quota places for the Tokyo Olympic 2020 will be up for grabs at the third stage of the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Shotgun World Cup in Changwon where the action is due to begin tomorrow.

The top two finishers in the skeet and trap events for both men and women will secure slots for their country. 358 athletes from 57 countries of all over the world are planned to compete at Changwon International Shooting Range. United States’ Kim Rhode who has won the women’s skeet at each of this year’s preceding two ISSF Shotgun World Cups in Mexican city Acapulco in March and Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates last month.

Rhode is also the defensive champion in Changwon having won last year with a world record score of 58 targets out of 60 in the final beating Great Britain’s Amber Hill. Also hoping to retain their titles is the US’s Vincent Hancock in the men’s skeet Italy’s Mauro De Filippis in the men’s trap and Finland’s Satu Mäkelä-Nummela in the women’s trap.

A mixed trap event is also to be held in the South Korean city that hosted the 2018 ISSF World Championships. Forty nations from Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania have already secured their participation at Tokyo 2020 with 113 out of 300 individual quota places allocated so far.

Shotgun Quota places can be found at the 2018 ISSF World Championships, the 2019 ISSF World Cup series, and the designated Continental Championships or Games during the qualifying period.

Quota places are allocated only to the National Olympic Committees, with the exception of the ISSF world rankings, which are awarded directly to the individual shooters and may not be changed by the NOC. The NOC may assign a different shooter in each individual or mixed team event, provided that he or she has attained a minimum qualification score.
