Olympic Shotgun: Aiming at Tokyo Olympic boom, Japan builds ‘Ethnic Harmony’ honor to indigenous Ainu

On a wooded lakeshore in northern Japan, the government is building a modernist shrine that has divided the native Ainu community whose vanishing culture it was planned to celebrate. At a cost so far of $220 million, Japan’s “Symbolic Space for Ethnic Harmony” is on track to open in time for the Tokyo Olympic, part of a drive-by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to draw millions of foreign visitors to Japan and to the northern city of Sapporo, where the Olympic 2020 Games marathon will be run.

The complex will consist of a museum, a replica of an Ainu village, many of which Japan ruined in its 19th Century colonization of Hokkaido, and a memorial housing the bones of hundreds of Ainu whose ruins were sent to campuses in the 20th Century.

For some surviving Ainu, whose precise numbers are unknown, the project underscores how Japan has failed to come to terms with its history even with more than a decade of negotiation on how Tokyo could meet its commitments to an indigenous group it officially familiar in 2008.

“I think it is likely it could end up becoming a theme park,” said Ainu tattoo artist Mai Hachiya. People would come to see the dancing and other performances. It would be like a zoo.

They hunted, fished, experienced an animist religion and spoke a language distinct to any other. Japan took switch of Hokkaido by the power in the 19th Century and made it a colony. After opening it to Japanese pilgrims, it forced the Ainu, which is labeled “former aborigines,” to adjust.

The actual number is projected to be much higher because many Ainu fears to recognize as other than Japanese and have moved to different parts of the country. Ainu children are half as likely to go to college as other Japanese and normal household earnings are suggestively lower, official data show.

Society was not accepting of the Ainu, and it still is not,” said Mai Ishihara, an anthropologist at Hokkaido University. There are still many people who keep their Ainu individuality secret from their children. Ishihara exposed at age 12 that her maternal grandmother was Ainu. She describes people separate from their roots as “silent Ainu.”

In 2009, after signing the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Japan’s government began bearing in mind how to start a new policy for the Ainu. Early suggestions zeroed in rapidly on the creation of the government-funded “Symbolic Space” now taking shape on the shore of Lake Poroto near the town of Shiraoi in Hokkaido.

In deliberations that decided in early 2018, Ainu councils asked for legal rights to state-owned land, more funding for teaching Ainu culture and language and an apology from Japan’s government. He told that an apology would be uncomfortable for many Japanese, as well as an insult to the Japanese pilgrims who built modern Hokkaido.

“We cannot do something if it is not achievable,” said Hiroshi Koyama, the official in charge of Japan’s Complete Ainu Policy Office.

“It would attention people’s courtesy on the bad things that happened and not the future. It would have been nice if the government had given us a place where we could carry out our traditional rites,” said Monbetsu, who burns birch shavings in prayer to the Ainu gods before stalking deer with a shotgun.

A group on behalf of about 2,000 Ainu supports Abe’s project, arguing it will deliver economic benefits from tourism and a forum focusing on Ainu culture and arts.  At a former school a short drive from the museum structure site, curators are formulating exhibits. Traditional Ainu coats hang in wild classrooms with knives, ceremonial sticks and heavy beaded necklaces laid out on tables. In the gymnasium, the dancer’s rehearsal next to stuffed bears and Ainu handicrafts.

A draft brochure labels Ainu hunter-gatherer culture as “on the verge of extinction.” It makes no situation to Japanese policies that forced Ainu to accept Japanese names, speak Japanese and outlawed performances such as a traditional form of tattooing Hachiya is trying to revive.

Hachiya, 36, who is also a singer, has been asked to practice a routine with other Ainu players that may be included in the Olympic 2020 Games opening ceremony in Tokyo. That’s a hard thing to say, but if you look back on what was done, that’s what you have to conclude.

Olympic Shotgun: Indian Shooting Takes Over the Tokyo Olympic

Many may like to believe that India’s success this year came through a process of slow and steady evolution, but the numbers show that in reality, Indian shooters just took a giant 19-kilo wrecking ball and shattered the glass ceiling. The year saw a total of 19 Golds at ISSF events in the Tokyo Olympic disciplines.

In fact, in rifle/pistol events, India topped the medals tally at each of the 4 World Cups as well as the World Cup Final. And all of this happened in a year when all the World Cups offered Tokyo Olympic quotas, a fact which always results in increasing the competitiveness of the competitions even further.

The highlights of 2019 included Abhishek Verma and Saurabh Chaudhary sweeping the 10m Air Pistol event at the World Cups with 2 Golds each, with Saurabh even making World records in the process. Apurvi Chandela and Elavenil Valarivan combined to win Golds at 4 of the 5 World Cup events, as they, along with Anjum Moudgil, created a unique Indian 1-2-3 on the World Rankings.

Yashaswini Deswal overcame two heart-breaking World Cups in Beijing and Munich to secure the Gold at the Rio World Cup, while Manu Bhaker and Divyansh Panwar both laid their hands on the yellow metal in the World Cup Final.

Olympic 2020 Tickets | Olympic Tickets | Olympic Hospitality Tickets | Tokyo Olympic Tickets

The rifle mixed team event returned 5 medals, including 3 Golds, shared between the teams of Anjum Moudgil/Divyansh Panwar and Apurvi Chandela/Deepak Kumar, while the team of Manu Bhaker and Saurabh Chaudhary remained undefeated throughout the year in the pistol mixed team event, sweeping the Gold at all the 4 World Cups. It was thus fitting that at the World Cup Final, where mixed team events were contested between international teams formed by a random draw as opposed to national teams, both Saurabh Chaudhary and Manu Bhaker still reached the Gold Medal match with their respective partners and competed against each other.

Amidst all the youth, Rahi Sarnobat had a resurgence securing the Munich World Cup Gold as well as the Asian Games Gold, and Sanjeev Rajput showed he still had a lot left in him with a Silver at the Rio World Cup. However, stalwarts like Gagan Narang, Jitu Rai, and Heena Sidhu all eventually lost their places in the national team, and slowly reduced their participation in competitive events despite neither of them officially retiring.

While the rifle and pistol shooters have reached unimaginable heights, the shotgun has unfortunately been a major let down. Indian shotgun shooters have failed to win a single medal at an ISSF event in the Olympic discipline throughout the current Tokyo Olympic cycle. One of the possible reasons for this is that rifle and pistol, especially at the rural level, have far fewer barriers to entry for youngsters.

Olympic 2020 Tickets | Olympic Tickets | Olympic Hospitality Tickets | Tokyo Olympic Tickets
Olympic 2020 Tickets | Olympic Tickets | Olympic Hospitality Tickets | Tokyo Olympic Tickets

It is reasonably easier to set up a 10m rifle/pistol range in a village, than it is to set-up a large and secure shotgun range, besides the guns and ammunition also being cheaper. As a result, youngsters have tended to gravitate towards rifle and pistol, as opposed to the shotgun. Further, trap events have also been hit due to the absence of a foreign coach.

In terms of Tokyo, after the Rio debacle, there is a feeling among many fans that Indian shooters often do well in ISSF events only to falter at the big stage that is the Tokyo Olympic. However, looking at the numbers, this is decidedly not true. While Ronjan Sodhi and Jitu Rai are definitely 2 shooters who failed to shine at the Olympic, other shooters have actually never had the results even in ISSF events that would make them the favorites at the Olympic 2020 Games.

Of course, Indian shooting has had many medal contenders, but not really medal favorites. The only other Indian shooters who would have been classified as medal favorites going into a Tokyo Olympic were Bindra, Narang, and Rathore, all of whom have Olympic medals to their name.

Olympic 2020 Tickets | Olympic Tickets | Olympic Hospitality Tickets | Tokyo Olympic Tickets
Olympic 2020 Tickets | Olympic Tickets | Olympic Hospitality Tickets | Tokyo Olympic Tickets

However, in 2019, Indian shooting has shown astronomical numbers that are on a completely different plane from ever before. Thus, any comparison of the Tokyo Olympic chances of the current lot with those of the past is an exercise in futility. The growth can also be seen at the domestic level, with the number of shooters appearing for the national championships increasing every year, has now reached into the thousands.

Many of our shooters will go into Tokyo Olympic as strong medal favorites, and the contingent would be highly disappointed to not return with our best ever medal haul, both in terms of number and color. And, hopefully, a successful Tokyo would pave the way for a new decade in which Indian shooting would not just be aiming for 1-2 medals every Olympic, but would actually be looking to be at the top of the shooting medals tally.

Olympic Shotgun: Trap Shooting Still Strong for Australia

The make-up of what shapes as a strong Australian shotgun squad for the Tokyo Olympic will become clearer at the seven-day Oceania shooting championships, beginning in Sydney. Olympic fans from all over the world are invited to book Olympic 2020 tickets from our online platforms for Olympic Tickets. Olympic Shotgun fans can book Olympic Shotgun Tickets from our ticketing marketplace exclusively on discounted prices.

The shooting program in Tokyo Olympic will be much different than at previous Games after the International Olympic Committee insisted on gender parity. That prompted the omission of three men’s events in favor of three mixed events, including the mixed trap.

Olympic 2020 Tickets | Olympic Tickets | Olympic Hospitality Tickets | Tokyo Olympic Tickets

Laetisha Scanlan and Penny Smith have already ensured Australia of the maximum two spots in the women’s trap at the Olympic 2020 Games. But one of them could yet be displaced by defending Olympic champ Catherine Skinner, who took some time away from the sport after the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

“It’s actually an amazing place for us to be in as a sport but a very tough situation for the three girls who are vying for the two spots,” said Shooting Australia high-performance director Adam Sachs.

All three of them are very capable of challenging for a place on the Olympic podium. The most competitive event at the Oceania championships is set to be the men’s trap. World No.3 James Willett has already locked in one quota spot for Australia, with the other likely to be decided between Australian trio Adam Vella, Mitchell Iles, and Daniel di Pietro and Fijian Glenn Kable.

Were Australia to claim the remaining quota spot in the men’s trap at the Oceania titles it would also allow SA to nominate two teams in the mixed event at the Tokyo Olympic increasing the chance of the green and gold challenging for medals in all three shotgun events.

Among the other shooters looking to lock down Tokyo, Olympic 2020 Games quota spots for Australia in Sydney at the November 2-8 titles is teenager Victoria Rossiter, the youngest member of the Australian squad at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

Rossiter and her older brother Jack are among Australia’s best rifle shooters. Dane Sampson has already clinched an Olympic 2020 Games quota spot for Australian in the 10m air rifle. There is a total of 14 quota spots on offer across the rifle, pistol and shotgun disciplines. Sachs expected the Australian shooting squad for the Tokyo Games would number 16 or 17 athletes, with the final makeup to be decided in April.

Olympic Shotgun: Sister Act in Tokyo Olympic Selection Duel

Aislin Jones and her sister Renae grabbed their most treasured possessions when told to evacuate Lakes Entrance in Victoria a fortnight ago – and those items included their guns. Aislin and Renae, aged 19 and 16 respectively, are among 36 of Australia’s best trap and skeet shooters competing in the Tokyo Olympic selection event that starts in Newcastle.

Four nomination events, two of which are being hosted in Newcastle this week, will determine who makes the cut for the Olympic 2020 Games. Australia’s shooting depth is arguably best illustrated by the fact Catherine Skinner – one of the nation’s eight gold medalists from Rio 2016 – is far from certain to secure one of two spots in the women’s trap.

Aislin Jones, who became Australia’s youngest Olympic shooter four years ago, is taking nothing for granted in her skeet selection quest. More serious matters have been on the teenager’s mind recently. The Jones family hails from Gippsland, scene of one of many flashpoints in the national bushfire crisis.

Aislin said “We’ve been very blessed we’ve been ok so far. I know some friends who have lost houses, it’s devastating”.

I was planning on training, but apparently, the weather forecast did not allow it. I’m pretty stretchy, I just changed the day. Shooting Australia has nutted out contingency plans in case of smoke or fire affecting competition at the Newcastle Lake Macquarie Clay Target Club. Organizers will follow AIS guidelines on smoke exposure but are confident there will be no issues.

“Shooting Australia chief executive Luke van Kempen and I traveled to Newcastle on Tuesday, just to check everything was in order,” shotgun coach Richard Sammon said.

They had a fire adjacent to the club the previous week, which burnt out close to 1000 hectares, but the club capability was not injured. If smoke levels get too high that would mean a rearrangement or termination but at this stage, that’s not likely. Aislin, who at age 12 hatched an eight-year plan to compete at the Tokyo Olympic, can’t wait to see her sister attempt to qualify in the trap category this week.

“She’s quite a competitor. I am thankful for the sake of our sisterly relationship that we shoot different disciplines,” she said.

Olympic Shotgun: Men’s Trap Looks to Regain Olympic Glory in Tokyo Olympic

Despite Team USA’s position as shotgun shooting powerhouse, Men’s Trap has alluded the team in the Olympic 2020 Games since Beijing in 2008, but the USA Shooting looks to change that heading into the Tokyo Olympic.

Jessica Delos Reyes, associate director of media and public relations for USA Shooting, told Guns.com that the lack of men in the last two Olympic Games has been a concern for the organization. With only a year left to work towards an Olympic slot, the men of USA Shooting continue to work towards the goal of Japan.

So, we haven’t had a man in the Olympic in the men’s trap event since 2008. That’s kind of been the monkey on our back,” Delos Reyes said. “Our shotgun team kicks butt and takes names. Our women shooters are the best in the world. Our men are getting there too but that’s been something that bothered us because we’re so good at shotgun sports.

The road to the Olympic is paved with quotas which the U.S. must vie for in order to gain a position to compete in Tokyo Olympic events. The shooting sports have 15 total events with each country capable of earning two quotas per event. You don’t get to just send an Olympic team. Your team has to win what we call quotas which is essentially your countries ticket to participate in the games,” Delos Reyes explained. So, you could have two men’s trap, two women’s trap, two women skeet, two men’s skeet and so on.

Olympic 2020 Tickets | Olympic Tickets | Olympic Hospitality Tickets | Tokyo Olympic Tickets

The race for quotas for the Tokyo Olympic began in 2018 at the World Championships in Korea and will end sometime in early 2020. Competitors earn quotas through a major competition like World Cups held throughout the year and the Pan-American Games held in Lima, Peru. Delos Reyes said while the US shooting team is already ahead of where they were going into the Rio Games, there’s still work to be done and quotas in Men’s Trap to be nabbed.

Delos Reyes said a contributing factor to the lack of medals was the International Olympic committee’s decision to eliminate certain events via Agenda Tokyo Olympic. Under Agenda Olympic 2020 Games, men and women now must have equal opportunities to compete at an equal amount of sports. This means that men’s only shooting events like Men’s Prone Rifle, Men’s Free Pistol and Men’s Double Trap no longer exist. These events were instead replaced by mixed team events.

Lindsey told “I’ve been in competition shooting since I was in eighth grade and I’m a senior in college. I’ve been with the USA shooting for about six years. I go to all sorts of matches and I’m trying to better myself and achieve my main goal of getting to the Tokyo Olympic.”

We were some of the best double trap shooters in the world on the men’s side. So those guys are converting over to essentially a different game. Double trap is more spot shooting whereas trap is that quick read and react. Anyone who shoots shotgun will tell you it is the hardest of the shotgun sports.

The team is stacked with names vying for that Tokyo Olympic spot but one up and comer looks to challenge the Men’s Trap drought. Caleb Lindsey, a trap shooter based in Pulaski, Tennessee is poised to take on the Men’s Trap quota system. Lindsey maintains a spot on the U.S. National Team in addition to claiming the title of the 2018 National Champion.

Delos Reyes says “USA Shooting is hopeful Lindsey will turn the tide for Team USA. We need to win those quotas. But I feel very confident that this is our game. We’re finally going to get a gun in the event.”

Competing against six-time Olympic medalist Kim Rhode, 2017 World Champion Dania Vizzi, 2018 World Champion Caitlin Connor, and 2018 Worlds bronze medalist, 18-year-old Austen Smith followed up her 2019 national title with the top total score of 243 to lead the women’s field.

Vizzi actually led after the four days and 250 targets of the shooting, 241 to 240 for Smith and Samantha Simonton, but then the top six competed in an ISSF-style final for additional points for the top three.

Smith out-lasted everyone, finally defeating Rhode in the final shoot-out, 56-54, to win the overall title with a score of 243-241 over Vizzi, followed by Simonton (240) and Rhode (239), who is trying to make her seventh Olympic team. The second half of the Trials will come in February.

There was no surprise in the men’s event, with two-time Olympic champ and reigning World Champion Vincent Hancock leading the overall totals with 248 after winning the finals.

Colt McBee, 22, best known as a country singer, was perfect through the first two days of shooting (125-125) and finished at 246. But he was only a point ahead of Hancock and Philip Jungman (245) and in the finals, Hancock out-shot Jungman, 59-57; McBee was the first to be eliminated. That leaves Hancock as the leader at 248, ahead of Jungman (247) and McBee (246).

All four Tokyo Olympic shotgun events including the Mixed Team events will take place and the Indian senior squad will look to put on a good performance, which can help it gain confidence ahead of the Olympic 2020 Games qualifying events later this year. Competitions begin with the Trap actions and the four Trap finals across senior and junior events are lined up on the second day. Both the senior and junior Mixed Trap finals will take place.

Indian shooters Apurvi Chandela, Anjum Moudgil and Elavenil Valarivan will be vying for top reputations at the year’s third International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup Rifle/Pistol in Munich, Germany. The opening day of the race will see women’s 10m Air Rifle final.

A total of 919 athletes from 98 countries, some in the non-competition lowest be eligible Score (MQS) section, will be competing for the 17 Tokyo Olympic ration seats existing, in addition, a desirable ISSF World Cup medal. India has inwards a 35-member team, 23 of them rival for medals in the 10 events lined up over the next five days. India already has five allocation places in Rifle and Pistol competitions.

As a result, they would be paid with their right to rations in the women’s air rifle and men’s 10m air pistol competitions, given they have already secured the maximum imaginable two quotas in these events.

India’s other allocation is in the men’s 10m air rifle and thus the shooters would be qualified for only one quota. Apurvi, Anjum, Saurabh Chaudhary, Abhishek Verma, and Divyansh Singh Panwar have protected quotas for the country so far. India can, therefore, pick up an extreme of 12 further allocation places from Munich.

Olympic Shotgun: Short on belief ahead of Tokyo Olympic

Indian shooters have been outstanding this year would be an understatement. Having finished toppers in three senior World Cups and one junior World Cup, they have been banging on target. But that’s after discounting the shooters from the shotgun section, a category that has never been the country’s strong suit.

While rifle and pistol shooters have been basking in glory, shattering various world records, the shotgun shooters have been a quiet bunch. In the recent Junior World Cup that was held in Suhl, Germany, Indian shooters had finished No 1 with a medal haul of 24.

None from the shotgun section could contribute to that tally. The plight of these next-generation shooters speaks volumes. Junior national coach Vikram Chopra has been trying to change the face of shotgun shooting. He conceded that the juniors have been far from best but he’s satisfied with their efforts. “Yes, the boys have not outperformed their rivals but their average return in international meets has been decent,” Chopra reasoned.

It’s not like pistol/rifle shooters’ fate has changed magically. It has been a gradual process. When the junior program was initiated five or so years ago, the Tokyo Olympic had been their target. Now, they seem to be in an ideal state ahead of the Olympic 2020 Games challenge. This is not to draw comparisons between the two. Rifle and pistol have always been India’s stronger suit. Shotgun national chief coach Mansher Singh wants to take a leaf out of their book.

“The coaching methodology and the coaches, including private ones have to be given credit. The former coaches come from the same background and understand the needs of the young shooters. We need that coaching culture,” the Olympian said.

Olympic 2020 Tickets | Olympic Tickets | Olympic Hospitality Tickets | Tokyo Olympic Tickets

To make matters worse, the double trap event a section where India has seen champs like Olympic silver medalist Rajya Vardhan Singh Rathore, Ronjan Sodhi, and Ankur Mittal had been dropped from the Tokyo Olympic plan. The latter, who had been making headlines not so long ago, is looking to find his feet in a trap.

Seasoned shooters like Manavjit Singh Sandhu and Mairaj Ahmad Khan have been far from their best. Manavjit, the former World No 1 trap shooter, finished a distant 66 in Acapulco World Cup.

“Rifle and pistol shooters have outdone us. Since we haven’t qualified for Tokyo Olympic so far, shotgun shooters need to pull up their socks,” Manavjit said.

Mairaj, the only Indian shooter from skeet to qualify for Olympic 2020 Games, has the best return of 11th so far. The only one who’s done something of note is Kynan Chenai. The Hyderabadi shot a high 123 in the opening World Cup in Acapulco and yet couldn’t find a spot in the finals. In the next World Cup in Al Ain, UAE, he suffered a similar fate. He shot 122 to just miss the finals by one spot.

Even the women shooters have been a helpless bunch alongside the cream of sport. Mansher admitted that shotgun needs more competition domestically. The shotgun does not have the numbers. Even in domestic meets, the participants will be visibly lesser.

We have to be sensitive to that. From a small number of shooters, we are trying to be the best. With all the odds against them, Chopra remains positive. The program (junior) that has been set up, we would like to be a four-legged chair than a two-legged chair. That stability cannot be achieved overnight. The shotgun shooters will be next seen in action in a World Cup in Lahti, Finland.

Olympic Shotgun: Tokyo Olympic trapshooting finds a home at Winchester club in Franksville

Madelynn Bernau called “pull” and a clay pigeon was launched like an orange laser just feet above the ground. If it had been a vehicle on a nearby stretch of I-94, the target could have been ticketed for speeding. But on the Olympic trapshooting field at Winchester Gun Club, it met specifications to a T.

Olympic fans from all over the world are invited to book Olympic 2020 tickets from our online platforms for Olympic Tickets. Olympic Shotgun fans can book Olympic Shotgun Tickets from our ticketing marketplace exclusively on discounted prices.

And it wasn’t faster than the charge of pellets from Bernau’s 12-gauge. The challenge was to see the streaking disc, read its angle and trajectory and pull the trigger – all in less than a second – to get the shot pattern to intersect with the target 35 to 60 yards downrange. Bernau, 21, of Waterford, executed the swing and break perfectly. For good measure, after the target shattered, she took a second shot at a large chip that spiraled high in the air. It was practice after all.

And for Bernau, a college student who is also a member of USA Shooting and is in the running for a spot on the U.S. Olympic 2020 Games for the Tokyo Olympic, there was no better place to do some training over the Christmas break. It’s also new. Victor Joerndt, an owner of Winchester Gun Club, decided a couple of years ago to build an Olympic trap field.

“I think our area really needed one,” Joerndt said. “It’s really a challenging form of trap. And if we’re going to give our young trap shooters a chance to take their sport to the highest levels, this is what they need.”

The predominant form of trapshooting in Wisconsin and the rest of North America is called the American trap. For starters, the targets are thrown farther and faster (72 yards at about 65 mph) than their American counterparts (50 yards at about 40 mph). The Olympic trap also presents clay pigeons at more angles and trajectories than the standard trap.

As its name implies, it’s the form of trapshooting offered at the Olympic 2020 Games.  Trapshooting is one of the oldest sports of the modern Olympic games; it has been contested since 1900. But Olympic trap facilities are few and far between in the U.S. With the Franksville facility, Wisconsin has a grand total of two. The other is at the Wisconsin Trapshooting Association grounds in Rome.

A primary reason Olympic trap fields are relatively rare is their complexity and expense of construction. The discipline requires an underground bunker with 15 computer-controlled target throwers. The field at Winchester is a gem and likely represents the largest investment in a Wisconsin trapshooting facility since the WTA project in Rome.

It has an awning to cover the five shooting stations as well as LED lights to allow night-time use. Each station has a voice-activated throwing system. The concrete field has more rebar than a 5-story building, according to Joint.  The lights, put in by a firm that specializes in the construction of golf driving ranges, illuminate several acres of trap and skeet fields out to a tree line about 300 yards to the north.

They are so bright, “you can see the shot pattern,” Joerndt said.

The station shooters see two right-to-left, two left-to-right and one center target. The birds are thrown in random order. Since two shots are allowed at each target, over/under type shotguns are often preferred so that different chokes may be used for each shot. A typical round is 25 targets. It was their first go at the International game.

“We intend to hit them all, but some got away,” said Kim Peterson with a smile. “It’s challenging and fun. I expect this will bring in a lot of people.”

The facility will serve as a valuable practice site for youth trap shooters in Wisconsin as well as host to competitions for trapshooters of all ages. While the WTA complex in Rome is only open for six months each year, the Winchester facility is open year-round. And with its high-tech LED lights, trap shooters can utilize the bunker field into the night.

With multiple national individual and team champions over the last 15 years, southeastern Wisconsin has earned a reputation as a hotbed for youth trap shooters. Yet relatively few have been able to focus on the Olympic trap since the closest facility was more than a 2-hour drive from home. The Franksville field is going to change that.

“It’s going to be a huge benefit to the dozens of teams in our area and beyond,” said Tom Wondrash of Burlington, national program director for the Scholastic Clay Target Program.

Could it give Bernau the boost she needs to make the Tokyo Olympic team? A veteran of three international competitions in May 2018 she won a gold medal in Women’s Trap at the 14th International Junior Grade Prix in Porpetto, Italy – she stands in fourth place about halfway through the qualifying process. The top two U.S. women will go to Olympic 2020 Games.

“I intend to spend as much time here as I can before I have to go back to school,” said the senior at Martin Methodist College in Pulaski, Tennessee. “I’m super excited to have this so close to home.”

Bernau has shot at 14 bunker facilities in the U.S., including the Tokyo Olympic training center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and three in foreign countries. She’s only 21, but there are only a handful of Wisconsin natives who likely have shot more rounds of Olympic trap. So, what was her assessment of the Franksville offering?

“It’s humbling, but a great and fun challenge at the same time,” Bernau said.

Wisconsin has produced some of the best young trap shooters in the nation over the last couple of decades. Wouldn’t it be great to see one who refined their skills in Franksville standing on an Olympic podium one day?
