Walter Yue Ka-Lok, the ex-Cycling Association executive director took up his post as track cycling manager for the Tokyo Games becoming the first Olympic cycling official from Hong Kong.
Yue said: “I was contacted by Tokyo 2020 last year as they wanted someone to take up the job to handle the track cycling discipline at the Olympics,”
Who is one of the three UCI international track commissaries from Hong Kong and has held the title for over 20 years. Hong Kong also has two road race international commissaries and Yue is one of them.
He said: “Hong Kong had already hosted one track World Cup series and one world championship before they got in touch with me. Apparently, they were quite impressed with our work on the two world-class events and that’s possibly why they offered me the job. In fact, they asked me to join last year when some managers of other cycling disciplines were already on board. But Hong Kong still had to host two World Cup series in 2019. And after negotiating with the Hong Kong Cycling Association, I decided to leave after our first World Cup event in 2019 so I could nurture the successors to my job here for the second World Cup series of the year.”
Yue said his new job would be very similar to his role as event director at the recent World Cup, handling all the technical aspects of the discipline at the 2020 Games.
Yue said: “Personally, it’s a great honor to be working for the Olympic Games even if the salary is not very attractive, but I’m also doing it for the reputation of the sport of cycling in Hong Kong which has been growing so well over these years. I wouldn’t think my new job will actually help any Hong Kong athlete win a medal in Tokyo as this is the responsibility of the coaching staff, but if they want the latest information for the event, I can definitely give them a hand.”
Yue will be stayed in Tokyo and not the nearby Izu city where the velodrome for the Games is situated.
he said: “I only worry that I have to find a flat in Tokyo but fortunately the rent is not as high as Hong Kong or I might have to spend most of my salary on that, It’s going to be a brand new experience working in another country for the Olympic Games. I am looking forward to it.”
