The competition at the Dakar International Expo Centre in the Senegalese capital, which completes on February 29, is the first in a series of boxing qualification events for this year’s Olympic 2020 Games. The finalists are being planned by the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Boxing Task Force, established after the International Boxing Association was stripped of its recognition as the governing body for the sport in June.

Twenty-two berths will be at stake across the eight men’s weight divisions, with 11 available in the five women’s groups. Three places in the men’s flyweight, featherweight, lightweight, welterweight, middleweight, and light-heavyweight types will be up for grabs in Dakar.
“The Qualification Events signify a fair and transparent pathway to the Olympic 2020 Games with equal opportunities for all National Olympic Committees,” said Boxing Task Force Chair and IOC Member Mr. Morinari Watanabe. “Everything is being done to provide world-class Requirement Actions and to ensure the best possible conditions for the athletes.”
Two spots will be available in the heavyweight and super-heavyweight separations. The women’s flyweight type offers three Tokyo Olympic berths, with two at stake in the featherweight, lightweight, welterweight and middleweight classes. Ghana is among the countries set to contest at the qualifier after overcoming issues that threatened their contribution.
Conferring to the Ghana News Agency, the team was closely left stranded in Dakar because of a disappointment to cover accommodation fees, before the Ghana Olympic Committee walked in to pay for the complete team costs for staying in the city for the event.
Action at the African contestant will be streamed on the Tokyo Olympic Channel, which is set to broadcast struggle from each interior event and the final world requirement tournament in Paris. The IOC platform was named as the select worldwide digital rights holder for the five finalists last month.
