Alekszejev said “I’m very happy and I can’t trust I am the winner. Fencing was perfect and the riding section was perfect. My last shooting was not good because I was looking at Ilke and I thought, ‘Oh my God’. After the shooting, I just continued solidly for 800 meters [run-shoot]. Today was very tough but I am very glad.”

Top qualifier and Olympic 2016 silver medalist, France’s Elodie Clouvel, could just manage 20th, two positions underneath London 2012 champion Laura Asadauskaite of Lithuania. The event is due to continue tomorrow with the men’s final.

The 30-year-old scored 1,167 points to qualify for Saturday’s (May 4) final in style. Lesen, a two-time world single champion, was mainly impressive in the fencing, ending with a record of 26 wins and six losses.
