The 25-year-old world bronze medalist and European champion of last year ended with 1,352 points in the Bulgarian capital, with Lithuania’s Laura Asadauskaite taking silver. Former world and Olympic champion Asadauskaite totaled 1,337 to tired Italy’s Alice Sotero to second by just five points.
England 2015 Youth Olympic silver medalist Francesca Summers was fourth on 1,326, one ahead of Russia’s Gulnaz Gubaydullina. Oteiza detached a decisive lead as she won the opening fencing event with an exceptional record of 27 wins and eight defeats, making 262 points. She preserved her location by taking third home in the swimming and 6th home in the equestrian event as the climate deteriorated.
That meant she inwards at the final laser-run event with a lead of 21 seconds and she upheld her calm and her lead as the rain drove down. Sotero was reckoning powerfully at this point having ended second in the swimming before winning the riding stage and she moved from 7th to third in the laser-run.
Oteiza said “It was a safe and sound race. I had to stay engrossed on the gunfire to have a good run to stay in first bed-sitter I am so happy. It was a very dressed swim and outstanding fencing. I think it was a new record in the fencing so I couldn’t be contented.”
Asadauskaite was also happy with a satisfying return to form after suffering surgery on a leg injury. She had been out of cautious action for 10 months but showed her fitness levels as she inspired up from 15th to second in a characteristically well-organized laser-run. Tomorrow sees the men’s outstanding race in Sofia, with the diverse relay transporting the competition to a close on Sunday.
