Jim competed in Tokyo 1964, Mexico 1968 and Munich 1972, before securing Gold in Montreal 1976 – a game in which he made headlines when he exposed the tampered sword of Boris Onishenko, leading to the elimination of the Soviet athlete for cheating.
After Modern Pentathlon and his service in the army, Jim went on to have a career in eventing before taking on the role of chairman of Pentathlon GB in 1997 and has since been recognized with titles of MBE and OBE for his outstanding contribution to sport in the UK.
Thanks to a wide range of innovations, Modern Pentathlon has become a more demanding sport that pushes athletes to their limits. Only those with special physical and mental strength allied to skill in all five disciplines can take home the gold.
The Union International de Pentathlon Modern (UIPM) was founded in 1948 and now has more than 120 member countries, reflecting the steady spread of the sport worldwide. The 200-meter freestyle occasion is a test of power and endurance. Participants line up in heats according to their fastest times and are awarded points based on their finishing times.
