French, 27 said “I am over the moon with the second position. I had to actually fight today, not anything actually came cool. I had an actually good journey, which I was so glad about, and that put me in a decent position for the final event. I just had to hold on actually I had Laura racing me depressed. I did try and stay with her but she’s so fast.”
On Saturday, French’s British team-fellow Jamie Cooke, 28, won European gold in the men’s single competition. Prior in the week, England won gold in both the men’s and women’s team events, wanted the men’s relay and the varied relay.
It was her 3rd World Cup win in the historical three spells after wins in Cairo in 2017 and Sofia a year to the day ago, in 2018. Russian World Champion Gulnaz Gubaydullina took silver but there was a fight for the bronze medal place with a fast final shoot seeing Varley claim it. French’s victory must safe her a place in the World Cup Grand Final in Tokyo in late June.
The event doubles up as a test event for the Olympic 2020 Games. Although Varley, whose previous best result was seventh, will not compete in the grand final she was delighted with her breakthrough performance.
She said, “I have been working for this basically for my whole life and I’m so excited it’s finally happened.”
