It came as no surprise that Joe Choong’s incredible 2019 season, which saw him finish the year as number one in the World rankings, earnt him the coveted Athlete of the Year award. Following a solid start of bronze at this year’s season opener in Budapest back in January, Joe went on to secure two 2nd places and a 5th place at 3 World Cup events, seeing him finish the World Cup season as number one.
Joe cemented this finish by winning the 2019 World Cup final – an event in which he achieved the Olympic 2020 qualification criteria standing him in good stead for Tokyo Olympic selection. Joe finished the season in form, securing 4th place and Team gold at the European Championships held in Bath, before taking individual silver and Team bronze at the World Championships in Budapest in September.
Newcomer of the Year was awarded to Olivia Green who joined the National Training Centre in October 2018. Kicking off her 2019 season, Olivia successfully reached the final in what was her full modern pentathlon debut in Budapest.
Her season continued to go from strength to strength with bronze at the Swiss Women International, gold at the Czech Open and a team silver at the Junior European Championships in Poland, as well as making her senior major championship debut at the World Champs, which saw her compete in the Women’s relay alongside Charlie Follett.
In a remarkably successful season, it was difficult to narrow down Performance of the Year, so this year it was split three ways. Congratulations to all six athletes on being recognized for their contribution to what has been an incredible season for Pentathlon GB.
