The qualification contest is set to take place from September 18 to 22 in Haiyang with teams from host nation China finishing the entry list of 16 teams per gender.


National Alliances earning a place in the 2019 FIVB Beach Volleyball Tokyo Qualification Tournament:


The two last winners per gender at the Tokyo Qualification Competition will each earn one share place for their NOC/NF at the Beach Volleyball contest of the Tokyo Olympic 2020 Games. 

The tournament will contain four phases initial with four groups of four teams each (Pools A, B, C, and D). The top three sides from each group in Phase I will advance and play in four pools of three pairs each (Pools E, F, G, and H).

Phase III will feature two clusters of four sides each (Pools I and J). The topmost two sides in each group advance to the Final Phase where the Pool I winner will play the Pool J runner-up and the Pool J winner will see the Pool I runner-up. The two victors of the Sports will get the quota place for their National Olympic Committee/National Federation at the Summer Olympic 2020 Games in Tokyo, providing they meet the Athlete Suitability requirements stipulated in the qualification system.

In total, the Olympic beach volleyball tournament will feature 24 men’s sides and 24 women’s sides. The Tokyo Qualification Tournament is one of four pathways via which teams can qualify for the Tokyo Olympic 2020  Games, also including the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships (1 team per gender), the Olympic Ranking List on June 15, 2020 (15 teams per gender) and the FIVB Beach Volleyball Continental Cup (5 teams per gender). The Olympic tournament hosts (Japan) are guaranteed one quota place per gender.

Tokyo Olympic 2020 Qualification

Federations have until the end of July to register the sides which will represent them at the qualification tournament in Haiyang in September. The pool composition of Phase I will also be resolute in the coming weeks after completion of side registration. 

Age Requirements:

 The least age for a Beach Volleyball athlete is 14 years old, on the first day of the competition at the Olympic Games. All athletes participating in the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 must, therefore, be born on/or before 26 July 2006.
