Chen Jia had initially led off with a single while Li Qi was hit by a pitch but a hard grounder to second base served a 4-6-3 double play for Australia. China continued to make inroads thanks to a single from Yan Siyu, but Australia delivered a five-run rally to take the lead which they would not relinquish.

“It’s an awesome feeling,” Harrow said. It has been the longest week, but the players got their reward at the end of it with their hard work. It is simply great to be back at the Olympics after a 12-year wait. We have a great history in the Olympics, having won one silver and three bronze medals. I am aware the competition in Tokyo is going to be much tougher with higher-ranked teams, but we ourselves are going for the gold.”

Australia is the sixth and final qualifier for the tournament at Tokyo Olympic 2020 when the sport will be appearing on the Olympic program for the first time since Beijing 2008.

“I waited for 12 years to return to the Olympics and it is so rewarding to be back at the Tokyo Olympics,” she said.  Having won a bronze at the Athens 2004 Olympics and the silver in Beijing 2008 I am looking forward to the gold medal in Tokyo. It is not going to be easy, but we are determined to emerge tops this time around. I may be 38, but I am far from quitting the game.”

“We have tougher games ahead, and in a way, I am glad we had to come from behind to win because it will serve us well for our remaining tough games. The players showed good character to get back into the game despite having some defensive issues in the early stages. In the end, it was a great start to the tournament, but we have to keep on improving.”

China’s play was riddled with defensive mistakes but they turned things around, with five runs in the bottom of the sixth. The other match in Group A at the Shanghai Chongming Sports Training Center saw the Philippines thrash South Korea 10-1.

In Group B, Chinese Taipei, the highest-ranked side at the event at number six in the world, were beaten 5-1 by world number seven Australia. “The reality is that for most of the players it probably will be the only opportunity to go to the Olympics, so I think it’s especially sweet for them,” said Canada’s head coach Mark Smith.

And for the older ones, it is the chance to go back and make right the experience they had 12 years ago that didn’t go the way they hoped. I know how hard they’ve worked I know the time they’ve put in and I know the personal sacrifices they’ve made. We have proved ourselves to be legitimately one of the top powers in the world.

“And our stats this week proved that, we have given up only two runs in the tournament, and that two runs cost us a ball game but when you look at our stats offensively defensively they have proven that they are as good as anybody in the world.”

Mexico, who beat Canada 2-1 yesterday to book their Tokyo Olympic 2020 spot was confirmed as tournament winners as they beat Cuba 7-0 to top the super round group. Women’s softball, as well as men’s baseball, will return to the Olympic stage in Tokyo after the sports were axed following Beijing 2008. However, they have not been put forward for inclusion in Paris 2024. Canada lost in the semi-finals in Beijing and has never reached the podium.

Hosts Japan world champions the United States and European qualifiers Italy has also confirmed their Olympic spots next year. One more place is available through the Asia-Oceania qualifier which begins in Shanghai on September 24.

Both pitchers retired the side in the first inning, but Holly Speers led off the top of the second with a single to the right side of the field, with the first hit of the game for Canada. Speers advanced on a soft grounder by Jenn Salling to third base, but then Escobedo fanned Kaleigh Rafter with a high rise ball, finally Larissa Franklin hit a high chopper down the first baseline, for an easy third out.

In the third episode Canada put the first hitter on base again, Emma Etminzger was hit by a pitch, Janet Leung lost to put again a runner in scoring position with one out. But this time Victoria Hayward drove in the first run of the game with a line-drive double to center field, to give the host team a 1-0 lead.

Groenewegen started very strong, retiring the first eight hitters she faced, but in the bottom of the third Tatyana Forbes slapped a hardball to third base for an infield hit, two pitches later the Mexican left fielder advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Mexico came from behind and took the lead in the fifth.

Head Coach Mark Smith replaced Groenewegen with Jenna Caira, but the veteran right-hander walked Suzannah Gonzalez to plate the tying run, one out later Mendez hit an RBI single to left field to give Mexico the definitive 2-1 lead. Smith changed the pitcher again, sending Danielle Lawrie to the circle, and the veteran struck out Amanda Sanchez and Vidales to finish the inning.

In the top of the sixth Kelsey Jenkins lined a double to left-center field to open the inning, but Jennifer Gilbert failed to bunt, with a fly to third base for the first out, Escobedo struck out Speers with an outside pitch for the second out. Then Head Coach Carlos Bernaldez intentionally walked Salling, to face Rafter, the decision worked out with the Canadian catcher flying out to right field in a foul zone.

“The plan today was the same as the previous days: one game at a time, it was only one more game. I just tried to stay calm, enjoy the moment, enjoy the crowd and being myself”, said Escobedo about her mental approach for this game. How do you feel now that you’ve achieved this goal? “A little bit relaxed, less stress now. It’s just exciting been here and living this moment”.
