The team was announced following the two-step qualification process that began in December during the tests of the American Olympic boxing team at Lake Charles in 2020 and ended at the recent Strandja 2020 tournament in Sofia, in Bulgaria.
The full athlete selection procedure can be found here. “First of all, it was a very difficult decision,” said Billy Walsh, head coach of American boxing.
Some of these boxers were neck and neck between training camp and the Standja 2020 tournament. We believe that the 13 boxers who won their places in the Olympic 2020 qualification team will be the best team to represent the United States in the upcoming playoffs, as well as the best opportunity to qualify a full team for the Tokyo Olympics.
The 13 boxers will have two chances to hit their ticket to Tokyo Olympic. The first will take place during the American qualification tournament in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from March 26 to April 3. Boxers who do not qualify in Argentina will have one last chance at the World Qualifier in Paris, France, from May 13 to 24.
