A new campaign which aims to bring the country together has been launched in Britain to mark one year to go until the Tokyo 2020 Summer Games.

The campaign is supported by the British Olympic Association BOA and UK Sport among others. It forms part of an international promotional campaign being run by the British Government to promote the sport in the country to a worldwide audience.

The campaign launched with a video that starts by pointing out that Brits can’t agree on much these days not everybody watches Love Island or is into the cricket and the nation is divided over Brexit sauce preferences and a range of other things.

British athletes at Tokyo Summer Games 2020 are due to benefit from around £265 million ($328 million/€295 million) of lottery funding as the team bids to replicate the success they enjoyed at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Britain finished second in the medals table behind the US at Rio 2016 with 67 the country’s most successful away Olympics. The nation is expected to slide down the standings at Tokyo 2020 according to a projection from sports data company Grace note Sports.

But the Government believes the British team is in a better position before Tokyo 2020 than it was prior to Rio 2016 with more World Championships medals won in more sports so far in the Tokyo cycle than at the equivalent point four years ago.

One of the key aims of the campaign will be to unite a country fractured by the political situation triggered by the decision to leave the European Union in the 2016 referendum.

BOA chairman Sir Hugh Robertson said. “At both London 2012 and Rio 2016 I saw firsthand the inspirational impact that Britain’s athletes had on the country.”

“Olympic sport is something at which we are genuinely world-class and Team GB wants to use Tokyo 2020 to bring the country together and make it proud of its athletes once again.”
